Still want to smoke?

I quit smoking like a year ago and for some reason, I still obsess over it. It's like; I feel I can't be as happy being a nonsmoker. Yet, I know that I wanted to quit for a reason. I enjoy having more energy and being able to jog. I still feel kinds a depressed sometimes though about not smoking. I even have Allen Carr’s "The Easy way to stop smoking" and it helps a lot and even explains that smokers don't enjoy cigarettes. They just smoke to relieve withdrawal from nicotine. So do cigarettes work as a placebo or what? Am I just going to be miserable either way? Nonsmoker or smoker.

Hi Dave. You must have a strong desire to stay quit otherwise you'd have slipped by now so well done.

Answer to your question, as far as I'm aware, is that nicotine can be and is unconsciously used by smokers as a mood regulator. Don't take my word for this, if you do a google search smoking+depression you'll find plenty of information on the subject.

I believe that those with a tendency towards depression are more likley to become addicted to smoking early on and will find it more difficult to quit later. There are so many different substances in cigarette smoke that have a variety of effects on the body and brain function and when we quit smoking we have to get used to functioning without this assistance. In my case (and I suppose many other smokers) I think I have always been susceptible to low moods, but have been self medicating that to some extent with cigarettes i.e. smoking heavier when I'm feeling down, to get a lift, which I suppose levels mood swings out. Then when we quit smoking we no longer have that "medicine" and have to experience the full force of our emotions - possibly for the first time in twenty years or more. The answer to that is that we have to find ways other than cigarettes to improve state of mind. I can't offer you any solution to that but if it's becoming a problem, you should speak to your doc, especially since you would have expected things to improve by now if they were going to.

Good luck and come back and post again for those of us who are a long way off your level of success.

Firstly WOW and Well Done for quitting for a whole year.

I am only at the begining of my journey so havent really got any advise as such but I think what Dicky said was fab and i agree.

I know I smoked loads more when feeling down and it was the first thing i would reach for when i was stressed or unhappy.

Stay with us and hopefully you can talk about how you are feeling and it will help you.

Congrats on a full year!!!!! That is a huge accomplishment and you should be very proud of yourself. I am almost 2 months in and I feel exactly the same way you are feeling so I am not much help to you, but I think at my point it is normal to feel this way. I can only tell you that i know this feeling is terrible and the thoughts of smoking sound great right now in order to feel better and feel part of the social activites again. After one year i would be very very discouraged if I was still struggling this badly. I feel really bad for you and I wish i could help you but I think the best bet for you is to see a doctor like Dickyboy said. I hope you stick with it as you have made it soooo far and I woud hate for you to crash now. You can keep going. We can do it! Hopefully your doctor can prescribe you something to help you get over this hump. My thoughts are with you!!!

Aw davidlee, after one year you'd deserve to be happy and free once and for all from the nicotine monster - I'm sorry to read you're craving cigarettes so badly. I can't really give any good advice because I've been quit for less than 2 months - just one thing though: DO NOT light one up, don't do this to yourself, please don't give in, you owe it to yourself to stay quit. Your mood would NOT improve, you would only feel much worse, and I get the feeling that whatever slight depression you might be suffering from now would quickly increase and a hell of a lot. Be strong! Come here as often as you can and share with us anything that might bug you, talk about your problems to those who love you, see a doc, do whatever it takes but please take care of yourself :)

Suddenly I'm tempted to list ALL the bad words that I know (and there are quite a few) just to see which ones will get through and which ones won't.

I think it is the same person that has logged on with different user names

Does this person not have a life of their own? Why pretend to be lots of different folk? I think they have got an ego problem - either that or they are just a sad git!!!:D
