Sorry to hear your GFR is 57 etc. My GFR is 35 & my Serum Creatinine is 136.

I would also like to know what foods etc to eat as I'm not feeling great too. :-(

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Everybody is different. I find that cola and too much egg makes me feel sick. Have you asked your renal dietician in the unit about giving you a low protein diet sheet? There are some fantastic sites on the web. Try googling low protein renal diets.

Sorry I can't be of anymore help x

I WAS TOLD 2 AND A HALF YEARS AGO I HAD CKD 3 I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO SEE ANYONE ABOUT IT. IVE NEVER BEEN REFERED TO A RENAL DIETICIAN. JUST TRYING TO PLOD ON TRYING TO FIND OUT INFORMATION MYSELF...I CUT SOME FOODS OUT THEN MISS THEM ITS ALL BECOME QUITE A MESS REALLY...... THANKS FOR YOUR REPLYS ALL....

Im the same was told nearly 3 years ago i had ckd stage 3 only see my gp every six months for blood test and got told to loose some weight i also have coeliac disease...so lots of foods have been cut, yet not much weight loss, and some days feel so rough and so tired and itchy an ache ...but when i ask if it to do with ckd i get told shouldn't notice any symptoms at this stage!...

my husband had problems with itching at stage 3 also my mother & also tiredeness!

so that's nonsense to say you wouldn't notice anything! my hubby itches less now he's on dialysis & renal diet together with phosphate binders!

i think you should ask if you can see a renal consultant & dietician lillrae!

problem is they don't seem to do much advice wise until your creatines are about 350 & gfr 16 to 20 then you get advice by the bucket loads!

There are definitely symptoms at Stage 3. I have horrendous itching - at the moment it's all round my neck area, but usually my calves are the worst. Also lethargy and loss of appetite. Regarding diet, it's best to cut right down on meat, and obviously don't add any salt to your food. Eat plenty of fruit and veg - all the obvious things really. The most helpful thing for me is eating small sized meals, with healthy snacks in between. If I eat a large meal I feel bad for hours afterwards as my body doesn't seem able to process so much food all at once.

we are all different. i am ckd5 and i dont have itching. as for being given bucket loads of advice i would like to borrow your bucket because i get zilch advice. i am told that i must lose bulk before i can go on the transplant list at the same time as they admit that it is my polysyctic kidneys that are causing the bulk in the first place!! i have tried losing weight and have gone down 3 trouser sizes but at the same time my kidneys are constantly growing. its a losing battle

Hi

I sympathise with you entirely!

I'm also polcystic and at stage 4 (egfr 20)

Polycystic kidneys make you fat, there's no getting over it.

Mine are 30cm and 21cm. My liver is also coveted in cysts and I have gone up 4 sizes. None of my clothes fit and I hate buying new clothes now as most shops don't sell the larger sizes....

Have you spoken to the surgeon yet as they should have a more acurate picture of what is fat and what is kidney?

Hi, as they already told you, we are all diferent.

I am end stage kidney failure due to polycystic kidneys waiting for a living donor transplant of my husband to happen most probably in April.

I have to say the attention of my team at Hammersmith Hospital in London is amazing.

I have the email of my nurse, and last week after 24 hours in hospital she even arranged for me to visit the renal unit the day after I came out to double check on the medication I had been on while my time in hospital and to make sure I was fine and my kidneys too.

I asked my consultant if I should stop eating meat, since I know when my father, aunt and grandmother went trought this stage they were told to reduce meat.

She said years ago was thought that could help but that recent studies showed it was not such a big difference and actually since I have been needing iron inyections it was best to keep eating meat.

I think I already shared this link in this page before, is a webpage of a health insurer in America with diet tips and menus and recipes for every stage of kidney failure that I find very helpfull and interesting.

davita.com/recipes/

Also this is the general guides they give you always in Spain , where I come from, when getting to stage 3 and after:

Good:

White bread, rice, pasta, corn, goat milk products, chicken, veal, lamb, fish in general except exceptions (100 gr a day of meet being able to exchange it for eggs, bearing in mind that 1 egg is the same as 50 gr of meet)

Asparagus, Aubergine, courgette, green beans, pumpkin, beet root, squash, onion, lettuce, broccoli, cucumber, cabbage, peppers and spinach (this last ones with a certain restriction)

Apple, pear, water melon, graves, strawberries, plums, apricots in conserve, pineapple in conserve, all jams and honey and sugar as well as olive oil.

Bad:

Bread and full grain products, soy products, Danish and industrial pastry. Chocolate

All cow products, seafood, oysters, clams, mussels, cold cuts, charcuterie, soda drinks, leeks, celery, mushrooms, chicory, dried beans, beet root, radish, olives, potatoes (specially fried or without previously being at least 30 minutes in water)

Banana, cherries, apricots, avocados, mango, Granada, grapefruit, dried fruit and orange.

Hope this info will be of any help at all,

Regards,

Eva

I think it all depends on YOUR kidneys. I am able to eat potatoes, bananas around 100g of meat etc, but no bran, liver, chocolate (although I do). I take iron and have been told I can eat crisps with salt on as I need the salt to keep my blood pressure up! If it goes low, blood doesn't get to my kidneys therefore decreasing function. I am stage 4, around 20% function, but not been told that I need to get ready for dialysis or transplant yet. My care at the renal clinic that I go to every 3 months is fantastic. I wanted to move, but after reading other peoples experiences in other areas, I am too scared to now x

I think it depends what stage/and whats effecting your kidney's and your blood pressure the perfect diet for stage 3 might not be for a stage 4/5 I found it a bit confusing at first. If your GP is good ask them or the renal doctor/ ring kidney federation helpline like I did (I am supposed to eat low salt diet ). I am at stage 3 Some times I felt very low early morning at work, I found taking iron tablets helped and if I have a breakfast biscuit & fruit. Other things dont really effect me except I cant eat big fatty meals like fish and chips anymore as they make my stomach uncomfy. Eating a diet that's high in oily fish is supposed to help me but that might be different to another someone else. I have heard that one glass of tonic water (not too much!!) helps with the itching but I dont itch anymore so did not try it!! Hope this is helpful good luckX

Ive also noticed i cant eat fish chips anymore which was one of my favourites .Ive just gone of it..I sometimes just get so tired after eating..Im going to try a new diet and see how it goes..less protein and stir fry type things just to see if i feel better...Im just in process of changeing my gp...so hope the next ones more helpfull....Thanks everyone for your comments much appreciated...lillyrae...

Strange you should mention fish and chips. We had a power cut in the new year, so popped round my mum and dads and got fish and chips on the way round. The moment I finished eating them I felt sick and continued to feel sick for the next 24 hours!! I thought it was just a dodgy meal, do you think it was just the fact I had fish and chips?? No touched them since.

I think it is the fat....get a some of the same if I have a full English/fast food I miss them all though F&C is worse it does something else to my waste water that I'd rather not got into!!!Curries and suffering a sore throat have the same effect as well!!

Hi

('m egfr 20 creatin 212 stage 4, pre dialysis)

One thing I've learned on here is that everyone's CKD is so different as regards the effect it has on our bodies.

I find that too much protein makes me feel lousy. Also eating too late at night. Small meals, little and often seems to help. Also lots of water between meals and also if I'm up in the night too.

The advice I was given at stage3 when it was first diagnosed was to eat healthily and exercise if I can.

There is lots of advice out there but I do find it conflicting.

If you are really unsure of what is best for your situation, I would revisit your doctor and ask to be refered to a dietitian.

Good luck with everything.
