Hi All,

I am new here and I would like to just give you a little back ground. I am 76 years old. I am actually in great shape. However, I have CKD, and my GFR is now 36. My right kidney was removed due to bladder cancer and Ureter cancer in 2014. I had a sudden drop since last visit in my GFR. I know the most important is diet. I am trying to understand what I really have to watch out for. Basically, I am following WW diet. What foods do I have to eliminate? Dairy? Protein ? I do eat a lot of veggies and fruit. Are there any that I should not be eating?? Thank You

Your diet really should be set up just for you, based on your size, age, gender and health concerns. I can tell you that in all probability you will have to cut back on sodium intake, potassium, and phosphorus. Those are the biggies but a good renal dietitian will tailor one just for you. Best of luck.

buddygramma, I am in a similar stage as you with an eGFR of 37. I have always avoided adding salt to my food and I drink plenty of water, eating plenty of fresh veggies and fruit. I am 75 and just under a stone over the recommended weight for my height. I had a kidney removed aged 12. I talked with my renal consultant about diet at my recent appointment. I said I wondered about reducing protein intake as I believed it was harsh on deficient kidneys but he said that whilst he wouldn't recommend eating loads of steaks, he thought I should just continue as I am. My protein levels are normal but what I am trying to do is avoid lunchtime protein sandwiches as far as possible, sticking to vegetarian-type food then, and having a small amount of protein in our evening meals. Good luck and keep well.

Welcome! There's a lot of great info and advice on here, but I'm learning that there are different causes of CKD and of course stages. All if these require different plans of action.

I'll just discuss one aspect-protein. From my understanding the amount of protein you need is based on the stage you are in. In very early stages it is advised to eat the recommended daily allowance of animal protein, in middle stages it is advised to eat smaller portions of it per meal instead of all of it at one meal and cut back on red meat. I was also to,d that if you eat red meat, it should be grass fed free range as it is much higher in Omega 3 ( same stuff that's found in fish oil). In later stages it is suggested to increase the protein levels.

As Mr Kidney said, please see a dietician so they can make a specific plan for you. Following our advice, though well intended, may not give you the best results. Here is some further information on protein. davita.com/kidney-disease/d...

This just applies to protein, but there are other foods that one should eat or avoid at various stages.

Here's an interesting tidbit. I was told not to eat star fruit. I kind of laughed as I think I've had star fruit once in my life, but it is just an example of a fresh fruit you would think wouldn't be an issue.

Sending you blessings!

Hi Buddygramma,

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about the serious health issues you've had to deal with.

Like others have said, a ckd diet varies with each person and you need to be advised by your family doctor or whoever is dealing with your condition. I actually was diagnosed by the practice nurse and I would mainly talk to her about my diet. She is a lovely lady who has stayed as a constant with the practice, while doctors have come and gone over the 37 years we have lived here, so she's like a friend, but very professional at the same time.

Hugs All, Thank You all. I actually have an appointment with my kidney doctor tomorrow. I was just looking for some hints about dieting that may help. I am doing great for this old lady. I do know, losing weight will also help me. I do have a friend that is stage 5 and still not on dialysis. So Thank You all again. He has not told me to cut protein or dairy as of yet. So, we will see tomorrow. TY
