What would cause a Grf if 51?to drop to 37 in 14 months with no high blood pressure no diabetes and no blood in urine. Haven't beennot drinking hardly any water do it? I now drink 96 oz water a day and stopped all pain meds and ibuprofen. I hope 4 weeks makes a difference in my Grf. Any advice would be great

Hi Camps1952

My GFR has been yo-yoing between 75% & 32% over the last 3 years, for no apparent reason.

No diabetes, no blood in urine, no high blood pressure.... GP sent me for an ultra sound to check for blockages / stones. - but nothing there. I have hashimotos but no symptoms, so I have blood tests for thyroid every 3 / 6 months & kidney function tests every 6 months. Has been 75 % last 2 tests, then 32% a few weeks ago. Like you, I hardly drink & follow a good diet & exercise fairly regularly. I'm on a maintenance dose of Levo 75mcg daily. Just be aware of any stresses - my GP seems to think that it's stress related.....

Don't know if there's any body else out there with similar symptoms.

You are not alone!

Thank you so much for your reply. Going to repeat GRF on 12/17 and follow up with GP on 12/21. He wants to wait to see what the next blood work shows and says I don't to see a specialist at this time. Done understand and in excellent health. I will update after my test is done. Thanks for your support.

Yes it is very scary. That's why after my bw on12/7 and I can see results 2 days later. Im going to make an apt with the specialist. He says people don't need to see a specialist until there are in the 20's for their GRF. I have been

healthy all my life but feeling stressed after my mom died last yr and think of her on a daily basis. Don't want anxiety pills. Got off of them. Just want to take meds that are medically necessary. Will keep you updated after the test as I have no symptoms as they described as kidney disease. If it wasn't for the blood work I would never know. Thanks again.

Hi, I was young when my kidneys started to pack in and I wasn't really able to make much sense of it. Took from 11 to 17 for them to finally fail. You don't get blood in the urine from poor renal function you get protein. If you buy some testing strips - Albustix - or something similar you can do a test for that.

Hi camps l952. My husbands kidney function was 56 in January went down to 27 in August which was when he was referred to a nephrologist. It then increased to 31 then 36 so a little disappointed when we saw the nephrologist this evening to learn it had gone down to 33. However he was not at all concerned as he said staying steady in the 30s was O.K. His advice regarding diet has always been... all things in moderation...... He is taking sodium bi-carbonate capsules 2 three times a day to keep his system alkaline. My husband has also suffered dreadful gout but since being prescribed allopurinol 300mg is pain free, looks well, is very active and enjoying life. Everyones case is different and what one persons needs can be different from another. Try not to panic as I admit I did....kidney function can go up as well as down....... After all if the nephrologist is not concerned then why should I worry..... Hope your next tests show an improvement, keeping hydrated is always good and as your BP etc is OK that's very positive. Stay in touch, good luck. Love Belle

Thanks as I'm so freaked out. You give me hope

That your GRF can be raised but was nervous when I went from 51 to 37 in 14 months and hoping it was because I was hardly drinking water and

The Ibprofen. Repeating bw next week and thanks so much for replying and hope your husband is

going better. Won't feel good until I get results on 12/21 and hope it is good news for me for Xmas.😊

Gfr can fluctuate due to your hydration status and other things. It's sensible to check it out but no reason to panic. From what I've read, the presence of protein in the urine WITH a lowered gfr is when there is cause for concern. You can live a long normal life with Stage 3 ckd, but if you've got protein in the urine it is a bit more likely that it will progress to stage 4. Good luck.

Hi Carol,

So sorry about your disc or should I say nerve pain. I began with sciatica on Christmas day 2013....given painkillers, no good, so more pain killers and then saw an anaesthetist and had a MRI scan then an epidural still no relief. In May 2014 saw a neuro-surgeon who suggested physiotherapy saying if it did not work he would be very happy to perform a micro-discectomy a 45 minute surgery to remove part of the fractured disc and release the nerve. I watched the surgery via u-tube and it looked fine. However he changed his mind in spite of the physio making me even worse. I sat in his consulting room in floods of tears saying he had mis-led me I was in agony and my usual 8st. was down to 7st and body mass index to 14 which was very low. Managed another consultation with a different neuro-surgeon who worked in the same hospital. He offered to do the surgery and it was magic. The 45 minute surgery took 5 and a half hours as the sciatic nerve was stuck to the fractured disc and it took 3 hours just to peel away the nerve. I was fast asleep so it did not matter to me......After the anaesthetic the surgeon told me about the difficulty and it proved that no amount of painkillers, epidurals, physio etc could have solved the problem. 2 weeks after the operation we went to a very special party, did not dance but did everything else and was pain free....and have remained that way since. The slight problem is sleeping at night so I take a small amount of painkiller and that does the trick. My pain on that Christmas day was in my left buttock, then went down my left leg and eventually into my foot, all this taking 6 months so I was worn out. If this persists Carol see a neurologist and if necessary a neuro-surgeon as these days it is indeed micro a small 2 to 3 inch scar which has faded and anyway so low down cannot be seen even wearing a bikini which I wore 3 months later in Spain. Persistent pain is soul-destroying one reason I understood my other halfs gout.....hopefully now controlled. He incidentally did strain himself moving heavy branches of trees and I thought....his kidneys....thankfully no.....it was a strain which is fine now....I am sure your pain is your fractured disc and compression of a sciatic nerve....so really hope it settles down without too much trouble. Hopefully you wont need surgery but please don't worry about your kidneys prohibiting it, as its usual to place you on an intravenous drip which keeps the kidneys hydrated for as long as necessary until you are able to drink normally.......it happened to me......Good luck, please keep in touch Carol, we will all get there I am sure..... thinking of you with love Belle xx

Thank you Belle. Went to Dr yesterday and said the pain was not my kidneys but could be sciata. Got a script for an X-ray

& requested a script for ultrasound for the kidneys. Going to hospital this week to have those tests run. But took 1/2 tab

Of perocet as they say it filters

Through the liver. Slept much better last nite.First pain pill I took in 4 weeks and going Thurs to repeat my Grf level. I hope it is higher as I have been drinking

64-80 oz water s day. They said bp was excellent and checked my urive which was fine. Looking for good results for xmas. Stay well.

Love, Carol
