Nephrologist (Very first appointment).

Diagnosed CKD in Feb of this year, I shall be seeing the Neph for the very first time on 22 July. I am currently stage 3, my first decrease was last May 2012, I range from 55GFR to 48 GFR, and my GP seems to think its down to long term high BP since 2002. Well controlled now and have adopted a renal diet relevant for my labs etc.

I just want to know really, what should I expect at my first appointment with the neph? I live in South Wales of (UK) and can understand it may vary depending where we live.

Thank you.

I went for my first appointment to see my consultant on Tuesday of this week. I have been Stage 3 CKD for many years partly due to years of taking anti-inflammatries. A few weeks ago I had a sudden blip and moved very rapidly from 45 to 33 to 30 and to 29, just into Stage 4. I was referred to the Renal Dept and waited just four weeks for an appointment. I live in the UK, (England).

At my appointment I had my BP taken, was weighed and urine tested. I then saw my consultant who was young and very approachable. He questioned me about different aspects and he gave me a full medical....heart, lungs, pressed my tummy and examined my legs. He said he thought the blip was caused by the urine infections I have been getting recently and he was sending the sample to the path lab. I had some bloods taken and I am to have a scan when I get an appointment.

He wants to see me in two months to see how things are and to look at the tests. He told me that if anything showed up that required quicker attention he would contact me.

That's all it was for me. I hope that helps.

I am in the US so things are different here. One thing you should do it keep track of your labs to compare them over time.
