Health Insurance Question

My donor & I are in the same family and on the same family health plan. Does anyone have experience with this situation in terms of how the insurance handled the donor expenses? Do we both have to meet our deductible or will they only look at mine and treat her as a 100% covered donor? So many questions.

I had the same situation. Our insurance paid for everything. On the donor's side, there were no expenses, so no deductibles. (I think I'd satisfied all of mine already.) The financial advisor on my transplant team helped us sort it all out.

you had a financial advisor on your transplant team? was this through the hospital?

Yes, he helped us not only understand the insurance but also calculate/project costs of post-transplant meds, etc.

Thank you! I thought that was how it will work for us too but wanted to see if someone had a similar experience.

We met with a financial/insurance person as a part of our initial day long visit at the hospital. They also wanted to make sure that the costs of the medication would be covered. My donor paid nothing, not even the cost of parking. Good luck!

Same here...donor, my son, paid nothing. I worked with social worker at hospital to help me understand how it all works and what, if any cost, would be to me. Looks like all paid for me as well! I’m only 3 months from surgery date, so I am still waiting to see if I get billed for any cost. I was told no, but I know ins cos can screw things up when it comes to billing. I was told by social worker she would be there for me to check for any mistaken billing.

Financial person said my insurance would be good, and she was right. Hit my deductable, and then they covered the rest. Got kind of spoiled with them covering 100% for the rest of that year. Good luck with your upcoming transplant. I have had a wonderful experience.
