Transplant & hysterectomy?

Hi, I was wondering if there are any women who would mind sharing their experience as a transplant recipient whose had a hysterectomy (after having a transplant)? Side effects? Questions you asked? Glad you did it/wish you hadn't? etc.

I'm discussing a prophylactic hysterectomy (keeping ovaries) due to risk from immunosuppressants (acknowledging there's not a lot of data) and having frequent abnormal gyn exams (i.e. paps, colposcopies, leep). Diagnosed CIN 1 & 2, some high grade abnormalities (but not the kind that commonly develops into cancer).

I'm 41yo, no kids, but don't want to have children, so that's not a concern.

I haven't had such a procedure, but knowing that we are all at higher risk for cancer what you are considering seems appropriate.

I was transplanted in1984 and had a complete hysterectomy in 1996 due to endometriosis. We Adopted.

Your problems sound a lot like mine. I had my transplant 10 years ago and this past October I had a total hysterectomy laparoscopically. I had no problems afterwards and I’m very glad I did it. It was getting more painful every time they did the colposcopy or leap procedure. It’s nice to know that I don’t have to worry about ovarian or cervical cancer.

Originally my gynecologist who sent me to a oncological gynecologist. Every thing went smoothly. I am truly glad I had that done.

Do they believe you are an extremely high risk case for gynecological cancers? I asked my nephrologist and she doesn't think it is a common recommendation in the USA.

My problem is I have the HPV virus and it was causing abnormal lesions on the cervix. The meds we take have a lot of long term side effects and while a normal person would be able to “ fight” off these lesions my gynecologist felt it was safer to remove everything. It was getting to the point where it was becoming very difficult to perform the leap procedure. And the lesions have the possibility of becoming cancerous. And the surgeon was fine with it. My nephrologist also gave me the ok as long as they took precautions with fluids etc. I’m glad I had it done and was surprised how quickly I bounced back to normal which was a couple of days.

I am not sure how common it is to do that in the USA. The risk of malignancy is there but not extremely high. Was this protocol recommended to you by your transplant team?

I wish I could help but I had the hysterectomy first and then the transplant. I had a full hysterectomy at 26 and then my transplant just over two years ago. I was 43 yesterday. If I can help please don’t hesitate to ask xxx

Happy belated birthday!

I, too, had the hysterectomy first in 2008 and then the transplant in 2018. In fact, it was discovered that I had stage 4 CKD when I was hospitalized for the procedure.

Have you ever thought of alternatives of having your uterus burned and keeping your uterus? Just something to look in to.

I had no choice, my uterus was packed with cysts and fibroids. I was told how it wasn’t cancerous they have no idea

I had my gall bladder removed 10 months after my transplant! Never worried, but I have never felt better. I may have to have parathyroid surgery in the future.

I had a hysterectomy, but I haven’t had my transplant yet, doing workup now. I was only able to leave one ovary, but I will say after years and years of horrible issues (massive rupturing cysts, horrible endometriosis, and needing biopsy after biopsy) the hysterectomy was the best thing I ever did, and I wish I did it sooner.
