Telogen Effluvium

Hi...I am 7 months post transplant and have Telogen Effluvium (hair loss) that is related to the transplant - shock to body. This is not primarily because of medication but made worse because of. Has anyone else had this. My hair is already thin and fine and have lost a lot. The Dr. told me probably 3 more months of shedding and it will grow back slowly.

Can anyone else share stories of this....I am so depressed by this

YES YES YES! I was afraid it would never stop but trust me it does. It did last about 3+ months. It felt like handfuls coming out. Now i have a ton of regrowth so hang in there, it stops and it comes back!

Not sure why but it seems my hair loss is just on the top of my hair.. it’s frustrating because it’s slow so you don’t notice but then one day you are like wth? My DR told me I can take Biotin. I also started using kerinique shampoo and conditioner

I am utterly heartbroken by the amount of hairloss I've suffered (and continue to suffer) with. I think each case is different and mine has certainly been longer than three months. I think tacrolimus dose change (increase) worsens/triggers further loss.

Hopefully it will all settle down.

Just know you aren't alone...we get it. These things DO MATTER because the change your QUALITY of life.

I have noted the same hair loss and I am 22 months out from kidney transplant. My doctor stated it was from multiple reasons including the Tacrolimus and vitamin deficiencies. I stopped the treatments to my hair and started on B complex, zinc 100 mg and vitamin D 50,000 every month with lower dose of Tacrolimus and it improved so I am not losing large amount with brushing of my hair. I would suggest going to a Derm physician as my nephrologist suggested. GOOD LUCK.

Yes!!! Mine fell out and I was so upset. I was told to use Biotin. I still take Biotin pills. Transplant said it was fine, but ask your team. My hair never grew back exactly the same, but it is much better, and does not fall out anymore. Sulfate free shampoo's are usually better too. Chemicals in shampoo make it worse. (Just my experience)

It’s not a nice side effect but at least we are still here to tell our tales. I have hair past my shoulders and omg it has gone so thin. I’m debating wether to get it cut off so it’s not so obvious. If I put it in a ponytail my scalp is visible as the hair has thinned so much. But it took me 8 years to grow it to this length so I don’t know what to do right now. Just take comfort in the fact that you are not suffering alone. ❤️❤️

I had it after my hysterectomy. It’s from a shock to your body when you had anesthesia. You can take Rogaine over the counter now, the kind you spray on your head, but don’t use it unless your transplant doctor says it’s safe to use. Some shampoos will give your hair a little more thickness and fluffiness. Have you seen a dermatologist? They specialize in hair and skin. Mine told me all about this.
