Hi everyone! Wondering if anyone has navigated the adoption process while in Stage 4 CKD. Currently GFR is 22 and I won't be evaluated by a transplant program until 20. My husband and I are trying to start the adoption process and I am nervous that our home study will be denied due to my kidney function. My doctor (and test results) and shown that I am in great health besides this and he would support an adoption, but he does feel that placement should not happen until after surgery. The hard part is knowing the timing. We want to get the ball rolling now so that we can pick right up where we left off after surgery (and minimize wait time for a baby).

Hi Danielle,

My wife and I started the adoption process when my GFR was around the same as yours. We were going through a private adoption process and after about 9 months my kidney function started to decline more rapidly. We decided to put the adoption process on hold. I’ve received a transplant on Jan 24th of this year and we just started up the process about two months ago.

We still need to have our home study done and are crossing our fingers. In hindsight we were both happy we put the process on hold. Would not have been able to manage everything with the transplant recovery.

Hola Danielleblock, soy transplantada renal hace 37 años, cuando me operaron en el año 1981, mi doctor tratante nos dijo a mi marido y a mi, que con la enfermedad renal habia quedado esteril!!

Cuando cumpli mi primer año de transplante, QUEDE EMBARAZADA!!, Dios hace milagros!!, no pude amamantarlo por los medicamentos inmunosupresores, sin embargo, tomo leche materna de otras mujeres que tuvieron a sus hijos en la misma fecha y que les sobraba leche!

Mi hijo ahora es un hombre de 34 años, normal, arquitecto y muy cariñoso conmigo!!

Hi Chicho - I only speak a limited amount of Spanish, but Google Translate helped! That is amazing you were able to have a baby after transplant! I am unable to have a baby for other reasons beyond kidney disease, which is why we are moving forward with an adoption. I trust that God will provide for us ( our child and a kidney) in His timing. He does work in mysterious ways!

Have you been able to keep your transplant working for 37 years? If so, congratulations! What is your secret?
