Anyone run post kidney transpant?

Hi! I am a little over 1 year post kidney transplant. Before transplant I was an avid runner (actually I did the run/walk/run method). Since my transplant I have ran two 5ks and stay active. My goal is to run a half marathon (never done that before). My doctors say go for it but make sure to stay hydrated. Just wondering if anyone with a kidney transplant has ever run a half marathon?

Years ago I met Chris Klug who had a liver transplant in 2000. In 2002, he won the bronze medal in the Olympics. Today he takes part in the X Games & has won a gold medal. There is no holding you back. Get your doctors OK first, but you should be able to do anything you want

Jenny0604, I had my kidney transplant on 1/19/18 and ran 2 miles on 2/27/18. I’m already up to 5 miles, granted not a fast pace, but I’m focusing on Zone 2 training. My transplant team is amazed at how quickly I was able to run. I feel great, and look forward to attempting the same as you with a half marathon. As I was told, stay hydrated. A good rule of thumb given to us was for every 30 minutes of activity get an additional 500 mL of fluid in you. I wish you the best!

That is awesome CNeb! I ran a 5k about 5 months after my transplant last year and felt great. Then had some medication adjustments and ran off and on and ran another couple of 5ks. The run/walk/run method works great for me. I've done it for years. Thank you for sharing! Nice to hear others out there with the same goals. :)

I wish you the best in your training for the half as well!

Thank you! I wish you the best! I’m nowhere the speed I was younger when I ran X Country. Now I focus on heart rate, not time. Zone 2 is 85-89% based on your Lactate Threshold Rate. Your pace will be slower but it’ll build endurance and speed. You don’t need to go fast to get fast. Good luck! You can find some good articles on how to find your LTHR without having it professionally determined, and also how Zone 2 helps.

Thank you! I will look into it for sure. Hope you find me again when you run that half marathon! I'd love to know how it went. I'm thinking of doing one in Feb...just have to get my head wrapped around it and know that I can do it. Sometimes, fear gets in the way! Working on that. :) Best to you.

Be accepting of that fear and the challenge, it will pay off in the end!

I know I’m a bit late to reply but I had my transplant a little over 8 years ago. I run a couple times a week (between 4-8 miles) and also do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Listening to your body, hydrating, and being careful are things to be mindful of but believe me when I tell you to run! Run at least as far as it takes for you to confront any underlying fears you have about your transplant and deal with them on your feet. Best therapy I’ve had! Best of luck 🙂

Great advice! I made my goal and ran my first half marathon last Sunday. It was an amazing feeling and I can't wait to do it again.

Wishing you the best!
