Kidney donation, vein retro aorta position

Hello,

I am a CKD patient 33 years old, GFR 9, still not on dialisys. Have FSGS (prooven genetic mutation ACTN4).

With my mother we went through 6 months of testing for the possibilities if she is suitable for a donation to me. Every result came up clean, but we were stopped becuse they found out on CT that her left kidney vein is retroaorta position, and the surgeon don't want to risk the transplant. Is there anyone who stumbled into this kind of problem ? We are now most certanly asking oppinions for another surgeons in another centre but I an curious if someone had something like this.

What is little bit upsetting that every test they did on my mother was fine but nephroctomy cannot be done which is little bit wiered for me.

Thanks in advance. I can provide more results even a CT if someone would like to help ?

In general when evaluating a potential donor, transplant centers want to make sure that not only are they healthy enough to donate but that the kidney they give to you will not cause you problems in the future.

Yes, I totally ageree on that, and that is something that I don't want.

What confuses me is that I found karger.com/Article/FullText... where I see that in surgery doctors are capable of resolving an issue like this. What I am curious about if this is possible with my mom. I have CT scans if there is anyone who knows to read them I woul be very grateful.

Hi, I donated to my 30 yr old son 12 weeks ago. On transplant morning for other reasons I was scanned to ensure they were going to take the left one which throughout all tests, they’d planned on takingRaising my concerns, my surgeon assured me that if necessary there was no problem in taking the right kidney! Anyway all was well and they removed the left. My point is, can they give you your mum’s right kidney?

Yes it was also my question, the surgeon in the one centre where we were didnt want to take it out because that kidney was bigger and they don't want to take out my moms bigger kidney, even if she wanted to sign that she wants it.

Also her right kidney has two arteries which is little bit more complex surgery but still they didn't want to take it out. Now we went to other transplant centre hoping that they will come up with a solution, but we arer all desperate in the family.

Can I ask Sophie where was ur surgery ? Maybe I can contact your surgeon, for an oppinion ?

Hi as I said they were always taking m left which in fact was the larger of the two as that was best for my son. I’d no say from the beginning on which kidney but was always in agreement with their decision. Apparently the left one is just easier to extract anyway. Transplant was at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland.

My surgeon was Vlad Shumeko who is just brilliant. Apparently one of the best. Please let me know how you get on

Yes it is interesting that my moms right kidney is bigger. Also on the isotope test her right kidney is working 59% and the left kidney 41%. It would be very helpfull if I can get somewhere another surgeon opinnion. Do you have any email how I can get in touch with Vlad Shumeko? That would be relly helpfull. I live in Hungary, Europe.
