6 year Kidney Donor

Hey, my name is Kala and I'm going on 6 years after my kidney donation to my Aunt. I had an open surgery, and had several extra arteries that had to be soldered off in order to remove my right side kidney. Unfortunately I haven't had a great experience with this whole situation. Basically I've had several medical issues sense my donation, and on top of that.. My Aunt has been treating me badly sense right after the surgery. I was recently diagnosed with fybromilaga, due to my chronic pain. Seems like the more time that goes by, the worse my pain has been. I'm just curious if there is anyone out there that has had any medical issues sense their surgery, or if anyone had extra arteries and had the open surgery on their right kidney like I have? I have been very closed off about the situation sense the surgery, and dont really talk to anyone about it. Reading a lot lately on being a donor, I didn't realize all the info the Drs had forgotten to mention before I donated, and the risks of my medical situation and health. Would be wonderful to meet someone that had a similar surgery as mine, and chat! There's a lot more too my situation than what I am posting on here.

Kala, I'm so sorry to hear about your experience! It sounds difficult, painful, and emotional. This has surely been a long journey for you. I am very fortunate to have had a very good experience, and I'm not sure if I can help you in the way you need it. I hope that others see your post and provide some support.

I'd recommend going back to your transplant coordinator to ask for more assistance. Maybe in the form of counseling, especially to talk about your relationship with your aunt. Your physical health is very important, and your emotional health is just as important. Because of the complexities of your health journey, seeking professional help might be worth a try.

I think you came to the right place to start a post here and find some support from the kidney community. I'll be thinking of you!

Thank you for your post, it’s sad what you’re going through, you’re brave and good hearted, it was a great thing what you did, even if your aunt does not appreciate it , you should feel good about yourself on helping a family member, you di not wrong, hope your health improves.

Regardless of the recipient, you did a wonderful and incredible thing by giving a kidney to another person. I am saddened to hear that you are experiencing so many difficulties since the transplant. I agree with the other response that you should get in contact with the transplant center and speak with them about getting treatment for both the physical and emotional issues you are experiencing. I congratulate you for reaching out to this group.

Kala, My heart goes out to you! It sounds like your surgery was much more complicated than typical. (They weren’t able to do it laparoscopically?) I agree with staying in close communication with your transplant team, and make sure you are getting your concerns addressed. I’m so sorry about the emotional aspect of your donation. Family dynamics really stink sometimes. But thank you for the amazing and selfless gift you have given. Prayers for complete healing of body, mind and spirit!
