Vein Mapping

I have vein mapping done next week. I'm worried about all these doctor's visits adding up in cost for copays, but what can I do I have to get things done. I haven't looked up vein mapping yet so I don't know the process, but it is one step closer to starting Dialysis. I'm worried when I think about it. What if I'm not a good candidate for this? Is that possible? I have been trying to just keep busy, keep doing my normal. Work and school. But what is normal anymore. I had to rearrange work appointments which made me think of a whole host of other things. This is no longer and interruption but a way to keep living. My plan is to work and do dialysis. It feels hard to figure out. And the unknowns are hard for a planner. Will I be tired? Will I need to nap afterwards? Will work work with me? Will I be able to focus and do my job? Will I be able to have as normal a life as I want? Does what I want figure into this? I realize my health is first. I just don't know if I can do it all. That's very hard to admit. With the idea that Black women can do it all being a way of thinking at times and for some. I feel that I have tried to live that and put that pressure on myself, but I know that it isn't important. Being strong is good, but it's okay to be in need of help too. They are both self preserving feelings. I'm rambling now, but vein mapping up next!

Is there a social worker connected to the dialysis center you are working with. She may be able to help with these very normal issues. Starting dialysis is a big life change and its natural to be anxious and have a zillion questions. Hang in there.

The dialysis educator did mention a social worker. I guess I'll meet her when the time comes. Thanks.

For me at least, dialysis the first couple of times made me very tired the day of treatment. Next day I felt good. After a couple of weeks the treatments were making me feel a lot better and being tired was not the issue it was in the beginning. We are all different, so you may not have any problems at all.

Vein mapping - for me they used an ultra sound machine to find good veins for making a fistula to be used for dialysis. I have very small veins, so the surgeon had to insert an AV Graft in my left forearm instead of using my own vein/artery connection. I also later on had a port put in my chest and was used for dialysis.

Best of luck to you! Keep us posted...

I was already retired when I started dialysis and on Medicare, so I'm a little different from you. I had my vein mapping done and a fistula created a year before I needed to use it. The vein mapping is painless and done by ultrasound. And the fistula or graft surgery is done under sedation so you won't feel it. Ditto for a catheter. I did manage to work part-time during dialysis (I was a caregiver for elderly clients through an agency and was able to set my own schedule). I was tired after my dialysis days and didn't work on those days, but I've heard of others who could. It all depends on the individual person. Since you're younger, who knows? You're right, you will need to take care of yourself first. It also helps a great deal if you have a support person or people who can help you when you need it (making meals, helping around the house, boosting your spirits, etc.). It's completely normal to have your emotions range all over the place! Feel free to turn to us and your professionals whenever you need to - good luck!
