Kidney, bypass and transplant!

I have been on HD since January 2019. About 2 years ago they found s 2.5 cm renal cell carcinoma in left kidney. Earlier in this year (2019) they determined that the RCC grew to 3.5 and were ready to do “something” to remove it. Before surgery, however, I had a heart catherization. The results of that procedure found serious blockages that will require quadruple bypass surgery.

Now what? So, they decided to go ahead with the kidney surgery under a light anesthesia. The cryogenic procedure seemed to go well in removing the RCC, however, while in the kidney a vessel was ruptured causing significant bleeding and excruciating pain! Morphine, etc. seemed to have little relief! After a week in the hospital the kidney hematoma stopped bleeding and now home trying to recover!

What next? HD every M-W-F, surgery on cancer, four blockages in my heart and a past history of poliomyelitis causing weakness, neurogenic bladder and difficulties in walking.

Yes, it is depressing, however, a loving spouse and friends help you realize “life must go on!”

Now, in two weeks I am scheduled for Open heart bypass surgery. It is scary to think about that next step. My hopes are that the heart surgery and recovery will allow the kidney transplant team to place me on the transplant list.

If all goes well and because the cancer has been removed from my kidney and my heart is stronger to withstand transplant surgery I will have a chance at extending my life; not on HD any longer.

Often the physicians look at my age of 76 and wonder if all this surgery, etc. is worth it. I say YES! I have to continue to pray and do all that I can to make “every day the first day of the rest of my life!” I just hop the bypass does not show any other problems. I will struggle to handle financial problems. But, if you don’t have health then you really don’t have anything. Thanks for listening!

Hello! Sounds like you’re a very strong person. I am so glad that you shared your story. We all have things that we seem to need to fight for when we are on dialysis. I have only been on this sight for about 5 minutes and I was instantly drawn to your story. Keep up the fight and try and think positive. It's good to hear from you again. You have been in my thoughts and prayers regarding your kidney transplant evaluation based on your earlier post. You'll continue to be in my thoughts and prayers as you move forward through you next medical procedure.

This "oldness" isn't a lot of fun; but we do need to keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep going as best we can. (Although that can certainly be challenging some days.) You are clearly doing this. What an inspiration! Thank you for sharing this with us

Its great isn't it to rely on improved science and technology to better your life?! CONGRATULATIONS. I believe most transplant centers require you to be cancer free for 5 years before being listed. But that may have changed recently. Life as a dialysis person is complicated but you are always surrounded by supporters. I've had close to 100 procedures and 2 dozen major surgeries in my short 40 years with chronic kidney disease and 17 years of dialysis. You are never alone. Blessings #kindredkidneys
