Through the NKF I am volunteering by becoming an Ambassador on HealthUnlocked and have become a Peer Mentor. Before I retired in 2016 I ran a non-profit that helped seniors get to the grocery store, doctor appts and have visitors through my 150 volunteers. I miss visiting and talking with my senior clients, so, I became a driver for our local "Meals on Wheels." Best of both worlds.....I get to visit with seniors and am also giving back for my "Gift of Life" through the NKF!
I also became an NKF Ambassador several months ago and enjoy responding to patient's and family member's questions about dialysis. I believe those of us with personal experience are able to identify with other patients and empathize with their situations. I also recently joined our dialysis center's Quality Assurance Performance Improvement committee as a Patient Representative. This helps give patients a voice in improving our dialysis center's performance each month and hopefully to make some improvements for the patients like better communication with staff and maybe starting a support group for us. I also have tons of experience working with seniors, both as a a 20 year senior center Mealsite Manager (love those Meals on Wheels!) and as a homemaker and home health aide working in people's homes for even longer. However, most of my time now is taken up by raising our Springer Spaniel puppy - he keeps me running around!
