Would you fly overseas and stay for 3 nights and 4 days or less than a week without pd therapy?

Hi everyone, I'm new on here and have been searching for answers on the net and found this site.

I want to know if anyone has ever or recommend travelling overseas (5hr flight) as I need to see a dying uncle. I'm planning to stay for 3 nights and fly back on the 4th day. I want to fly as soon as, as he may pass away any day. My specialist appointments in the last year has been good and there is no mature concerns apart from headaches.

Any help please?

Thanks

Hi Shatia, sorry for late reply. It is best to discuss your intentions with your consultant and they will advise on what precautions, vaccinations, hygiene routine etc. I went for 3 nights in Africa same situation as yours as my mother was not feeling well. I really had to be very cautious. The risks are there but the decision is yours. Hope that helps.

No, I wouldn't. You can have the supplies to wherever you decide to go as long as you coordinate where toy are going and how long you will be gone, unless its a country that doesn't do dialysit.. NEVER go anywhere with out dialysis. Your health is more important. Talk to ppl at your center

I never travel without a green light from my nepro and Nurse. I have made a number of trips after my treatment on Wednesday(do the travel to arrive on Wed afternoon or evening) and travel back on Sunday so I can cycle back on Monday morning. When you go out of the country there are many vaccinations required (depending on the country) and some of the countries require visas. Some of these requirements do take time so your social worker should have the agency you need to contact so they can walk you through the paper work, time involved, costs, etc. Good luck and I hope you get to make the trip.

P.S. Some of the Countries do have Hemo usually dependent on the size of the City--but they to need advance notice which might give you more time.

Hi peewee2574,

Appreciate your comment.

I've been given the green light from my nurse with caution ofcourse... (watch my liquid and phosphate intake...etc). As soon as I get back from my trip I need to do a manual icodextrin to remove some of the waste from my trip before doing my pd for the night. So I'm in NZ and im travelling to Sydney, Australia this weekend. I'm pretty excited but unfortunately I'm going to attend an uncle's funeral.. so not so exciting trip.

Anyway thank you and I'll let you know how it went.

Thanks

Since your dialysis is PD you ,may find traveling a bit easier rather than going to a center. I found you can get a visa by applying on line. Don't think it will be difficult but I'm not sure of the regs going from NZ to AUS. You can probably get almost all of your answers from the internet.

Hi Peewee2574,

We don't need visa to enter Australia but thank you😊

Just an update on my trip to Sydney, Australia without any therapy (on PD that is) and I'm happy to say it went really really well. I was ofcourse very cautious with my intake but it was a success. In a long time I've never felt so good. I was away for 4 nights and 5 days with no complications. I just needed to control what i ate and drank. I also learnt how to balanced out my day and not become too tired.

As soon as I got back I was straight back on my PD. I have my specialist appointment next month and will see my blood results then. Hopefully it's all normal than usual.

My advice if your thinking of travelling, don't let diaylsis run your life, you are in total control. Plan ahead and just go for it. Im already planning another trip and this time to Japan in July 2019. I've made contact with Baxter Japan and it sounds very positive. Watch this space for more update.

Oh I also forgot to mention I've already made 2 other trips to Rarotonga, Cook Islands. That was more of an effort though as I had my therapy stuff organised and delivered through Baxter and extra cost too but it's worth it.

Thanks for your time.

Unfortunately you can not skip. You have to do your treatment. However, talk to ppl where your at and they can send supplies to where ever you travel to.

But I do know for overseas trips are different. There are some countries where you can't go.
