Hello All

Started in center dialysis 18 months ago - still have a teeny weeny bit of function left with one kidney so I go twice a week for 3 hours. soon enough it will be three days and fluid to take off. now I just cleanse with nominal fluid removal (I urinate). I am just worried about what it will be like when I stop urinating and have to take off everything I drink. that will be weird and hard to do - especially summers. how do you folks control the fluid intake??

I go three days a week Monday Wednesday Friday for four hours. I had a transplant but after 23 years I got pneumonia sadly and it affected my kidney so I'm back on dialysis again. The first time I was blessed I only was on it six months and I don't remember having to watch the fluid so much. Now it seems every time I go they tell me I'm over my limit and I have to go next to treatment again this week . It's getting to be a real pain in the neck. I need to lose more weight which is so hard and then call st vincents and Los Angeles and hopefully they can put me on the official transplant list. Summertime is really hard because it's been so hot here and I like to chew on ice which I guess also turns to water. I like yogurt and Jell-O else so I have to watch that and the soup because soup also has a lot so I stopped eating chips but after a while it's like what do I eat being diabetic I have to watch the sugar also. Good luck to you.

Hi! I started dialysis last October and I go 3 days a week for 3 hours. They do take a little fluid off me, usually .8 to 1.0 kilograms, which also allows for 1 drink and the iv bag. I still urinate, though not as much as before I started dialysis. You do have to be careful not to drink too much, because then they'll have to take more fluid off and you may get cramps in your muscles. I try to limit my drinks to 2 cups of coffee and 4 ounces of cranberry juice to take my pills in the morning. Then I have another cup of coffee during my treatment. I try to limit to just a glass of water for the rest of the day, but if it's really hot I may have a little more. Water or ice will satisfy your thirst better, also I suck on a hard candy while I drive home after dialysis. Ask your nephrologist or your dietitian for specific recommendations and hints for you. Good luck to you!
