I'm not sure I understand the purpose of a fistula if the hemo nurse is going to stick one (or two?) needles in one's arm(s) each session. I would think that constant needle pokes would tear up one's skin.

It's two needles, one for arterial access and one for venous access. The fistula itself is a greatly enlarged vessel formed by joining a vein and an artery. The technicians are very skilled in guiding the needles in smoothly and usually use different areas of the fistula each time to avoid scarring the skin and to avoid forming aneurisms. I use a numbing cream about an hour before each treatment so I don't feel the needles going in, but some people just get used to the needles and don't feel them as the skin toughens up. You have to have two needles because the arterial draws the "dirty" blood and the venous returns the cleaned blood to your body.

I have had a fistula since I started the D. Party 7 and a half years ago.. Mostly it doesn't hurt just a minor pinch. It depends on the tech.. with some techs I don't even feel the needles going in. My arm is overall fine..
