My husband asked me to make spaghetti, forgetting that tomatoes are a no-no. I looked at my canned tomatoes, Muir Glen organic salt free, and the potassium is 4% of a normal diet. It seems like I should be able to have that, especially if I had a ton of veggies to it.

THanks for sharing, will look at organic canned tomatoes but will use in moderation.

Why are tomatoes a no-no? Yes, they are high in potassium, but a small amount is OK. Also, a good alternative to a tomato base sauce is EVOO and a little parm. Another thing, I think the serving size is .5 cup. Would your husband actually use 1/2 cup of sauce in a serving of spaghetti? Good luck

Yes, at least a cup, but he's not the one I'm worrying about, its me

Just cut back on the amount you eat... enjoy life. I love tomatoes and I've just cut back on the amount I eat.

Thanks. I have found that most of my favorite foods are a nono.. I am limiting amounts such as 1 cherry tomato on my salad

Don't mix the pasta and sauce ahead of time. Put the pasta on the plate and put a ladle (or less) of sauce on top of it. In this way you control your portion.

A 1/2 c if sauce, is not going to harm you. Put a bit of olive oil on your pasta first and then the sauce. It will extend it. My philosophy is if I know I am going to have something with higher potassium in it, I make sure the rest of the day I do not eat anything high. High potassium comes from extended consumption of high potassium products. For example, the BP med I was one for YEARS was the main culprit for my high potassium. Eating broccoli one night is not.

Thank you. Which BP med do you take? I tried to stop mine bc I don't have high blood pressure, I have white coat syndrome but my heart doctor insisted I take it. Metropolol

Same with me but, they say it also helps heart and blood pressure and other things so, I think it is use as a catch all drug.

I have had a transplant but they tell me no caffeine but other things not to worry about unless it makes me feel bad. I don’t eat red meat often and limited milk & cream, cheese in moderation seems ok. I watch carbs due to meds driving up sugar and it runs in my family too. I do this to stay at pre-diabetes levels. Red meat actually makes my side hurt and too much dairy effects my walking it seems I read this from other posts as well.

Tomatoes however, do not bother me. I use Palmini noodles which is nothing but hearts of palm noodles no carbs tastes fabulous.
