Vaccines prior to Blood work

Do you think that my husband's blood work will be affected by the Covid booster and flu shot received four weeks prior to blood draw? I am concerned enough about lab results without them being negatively affected. He has CKD stage 3B.

Thank you for your input.

I don't know for sure but the major issue with my CKD is spilling protein. It's been about in the 200-300 in labs but about 2 weeks after I got my 1st covid shot it went up to almost 3000, The neph I had at that time didn't think it had anything to do with my labs. But I moved and now have another neph and when i mentioned this to her, she said, she had heard that before. I know that doesn't answer your question but will be interested in hearing what others have to say.

Unfortunately I think your answer illustrates that no one knows the effects of the vaccine on lots of things including bloods. Its unprecedented.

PS I presume your urinary protein figs are total and in milligrams?

Nobody can tell you for sure. Just make sure your GP, specialist or whoever makes an entry onto your husbands records so that it can be referred back to if necessary

Just received my blood work. I got (2) vaccines, and (2) boosters. The last was in June. My GFR from 57 to 62. I have been very careful with hydrating, food, exercise, alcohol, all summer, and it seems to have helped. My kidney injury was acute due to blood pressure meds given to me. It has taken (3) years for my kidneys to come back to this point. Still not as high as before I had the injury. I didn't eat protein the day before. So all of these things combined helped my numbers. Don't know if it means my kidneys are working better or just learned how to manage them.

I also had AKI due to bp meds (indapamide & losartan..........now on amldipine). My GFR dropped from 85 to 29 in about 10 days. I felt like I was dying. I had the 1st Covid jab slap bang in the middle of this crash, and although like a lot of people, a few hours later I was shaking like I was holding a jack-hammer, I don't think it affected my kidneys. This was Feb 2020. Fortunately my kidneys recovered, and I think I am very lucky.

Hi Milli77

I hope that you don't mind me asking butI'm always curious about other people's experience with AKI and the treatment they received. My treatment was a phone call from the GP at 4pm on a Friday telling me to take my blood pressure, stop the indapamide (I'd already stopped this, as it was a new med and it had clearly made me very unwell in just 3 days) & the losartan and pick up amlodipine, and texted me a blood form for repeat U&E's on the Monday. The GP didn't note that the test was urgent, so I spent 4 days not knowing which way it was going to go, and clearly neither did he. He did call me on the Monday evening to tell me the results weren't back, and that I may get a call from the 'out of hours' service telling me that I need to go to hospital.

Since then I've had U&E's tested at increasing intervals, which seems reasonable.

I've recently got round to asking for an ACR/uACR test, which would not have been offered, but I believe is quite important.

My Family Physician changed my blood pressure medication from Lisinopril (because of coughing reaction) to Losartan. My GFR over several months dropped down to 44. My physician told me I had CKD Stage 3B. Never said it was from the medication. I immediately went to a nephrologist and he said "Acute from Blood Pressure Medication". He told me "your doctor did this to you". He said you probably didn't need BP medication ( I do have white coat), Nephrologist told me it would go back up in time. It has been ranging from 54 to 59 over the past two years. This last test was the most favorable at 62. I was never told to change my diet or anything. I did on my own. No red meat, little dairy, exercise, cut down on alcohol. I never drank much at all. Now I will just have one drink. I don't think my kidneys have fully recovered. I am just managing my condition with healthier habits. Hope this helps you.

I have never once been advised of any special diet or what to eat and when the vaccines arrived for covid and some of the mild side affects I questioned my gp for advice not neph having stage 3/4 kidney disease decided against them and i isolated and wore mask when I did choose to go out. People i know with a healthy background who socialised more school work and have the vaccines have had covid yet were protected against it.

There are no study to confirm that. However to stay on safe side I would avoid this "coincidence". rgs

I have had 2 covid vaccines and 1 booster and a flu shot last year. My blood work has been improving so in my case the vaccines did not affect my ckd. I was almost stage 4 and last check was 3a. I’m getting the updated booster soon. I do not have protein leakage though so I don’t know if it would have been affected. I hope your husband’s blood work doesn’t decline any further. 🙏🏻

Hi llexycat

I have all bloods done prior to talking any shot -this way less to think about.

Check in with your husband's GP or nephrologist prior to taking the shots. This will keep you on the same page and allow for feedback. Our GGP advocates Covid but not at the same time as a flu shot. Good to know.

Hope this helps.
