I've got a lot of problems with my back. My rheumatologist had me on Celebex, which did a wonderful job, but had me switch to Tramadol, which also works. He said Celebrex could cause further kidney damage. However, if I take Tramadol once a day (50mg) I develop gastroparesis after about two months of continuous use. To deal with that, I quit Tramadol for a couple of weeks (and basically live with the pain) and then start taking it again. I think Tramadol would be only prescribed for patients with chronic pain. My only alternative is paracetamol which, for me, does absolutely nothing.

Hope this helps a bit.

Tylenol ( only helps with pain but NOT imflmation and CBD ( it reduces pain and imflmation) so take both of them for best coverage .

We are all different. CBD with and without THC did nothing for me

Then you are not taking enought ,increase dosage until it does work . Once you get out of pain you can cut does age down a bit .

It takes twice as much medication to get out of pain than it takes to stay of pain. But the medication must be taken in a regular basis .

Usually about every 3 .5 to 4 hours maximum for CBD .

There are many differant strengths of CBD tinctures . You have to use a strong concentration and use more in the beginning .

Then you will be able to take less .

You must experiment with dosage till you find the correct amount for yourself .

I did, it still didn't work

OK well as an RN I usnderstand how to do this property . But everyone does not .

Too bad CBD blocks the same pain receptors in the nervous system as Morphine does .

When taken at proper dosages and times it works quite well .

Well, it's not rocket science and I was a bit offended that you said i was too dumb to understand how to take a med.

I did not say you were "too Dumb" .

I any case wish you the best in finding your pain relief.

I suggest you work closely with your health care practitioner.

FYI when you say someone doesn't understand something that is simple you are saying they are too dumb.

Pain Killer are really an issue for CKD. You need to talk your nephroligist. What I can tell you right now is stay away from NSAD (Aulin, Lubrofen, Brufen etc). Those are poison for kideny.

I have pretty severe back pain. I have started taking Arthritis Strength Acetaminophen. While it doesn't take the pain away entirely it does seem to help take the edge off. Baclefan and Tramadol don't help at all.

TRAMADOL DOES HELP ME BUT HARD TO GET FROM MY DR AND TYLENOL DOES NOTHING. MY LEGS AND LOWER BACK HURT AND I HAVE A MEDIAL MENISCUS THAT IS HURTING . I KNOW IF I HAVE SURGERY ON IT IT WILL HURT MY KIDNEYS AND DO NOT WANT THAT SO NOT SURE WHAT TO DO NEXT

Why would surgery hurt your kidneys?

THE PROCEDURE AND THE MEDICINE THEY WOULD USE

Why would having surgery harm your kidneys? I've hadnearly 30 surgeries and well over 100 procedures while in stage 2-5 without harm.

WELL I DID NOT KNOW THAT SO TY:)

I have had severe lower back pain for years and finally started seeing a pain doctor. Because of my CKD, I told her I can't take NSAIDS any longer and she knew that. She put me on the lowest dose Hydrocodone and I've been on it for about a year. I just recently had the radio frequency ablation done to see if that helps. Here is an article I found a few years ago that is about treating pain in CKD patients. the-hospitalist.org/hospita...

I have stage 3b ckd and osteoarthritis. I take 1300 mg. of Acetaminophen (two 650 mg.) tablets for pain. It seems to help relieve my pain a little, it takes the edge off. I get my Acetaminophen from Amazon. Buying the 400 count costs me about 4 cents a tablet. My nephrologist is aware that I take this amount and hasn't said anything.

Thanks My_Kidneys. I haven't tried that high of dosage. I think I might try it.

I got this from: drugs.com/dosage/acetaminop...

Oral:

Immediate-release: 325 mg to 1 g orally every 4 to 6 hours

Minimum Dosing Interval: every 4 hours

Maximum Single Dose: 1000 mg

Maximum Dose: 4 g per 24 hours

Extended-Release: 1300 mg orally every 8 hours

Maximum dose: 3900 mg per 24 hours

So, my question for you is: Are you talking about this last regime (1300 mg of extended release)?

My_Kidneys profile image
My_Kidneys in reply to Crianza

Yes. I take 1300 mg when I have pain. Not to exceed 6 tablets a day. It is recommended not to drink alcohol, as this could affect your liver.

Tylenol

Tylenol is metabolized in your liver (per my pharmacist) which is why it is safe for CKD patients. I take either Arthritis Strength Tylenol that works for 8 hours or extra strength tylenol that works for 6 hours.

I have chronic pain from osteoarthritis in almost all of my joints and fibromayglia. Right now, I have a hip that seriously needs replacing and I have to lose weight before it can be done. I am seeing a pain specialist to find solutions to relieve the pain. I just switched pain specialists because the old one just prescribed narcotics and after I had a scary blood pressure reading (88/55) I refused to take narcotics. The new one works in a clinic where they do not prescribe any narcotics. I go in for a test injection in my hip for a nerve block. If that works, then he will "fry" the nerves to give me 6 to 9 months of pain relief.

My PCP thinks my CKD was caused by the 25+ years of taking anti-inflamatories. I stopped these in January when I was diagnosed with CKD. I do miss my anti-inflamatory.

Celebrex is an NSAID which is death to kidney nephrons. Unfortunately only tylenol for pain. I have had poly-osteoarthritis with 2 knees, 2 hips replaced and both ankles fused. Back is trashed as is my neck shoulders, elbows, etc. So ice, heat, massagers, anything you can find that helps. But stay away from any NSAIDS. As topaz points out above 👆 over indulgence in NSAIDS CAUSES kidney failure.

Finally as Mr. Kidney points out if you need surgery, you should be fine. I have 22 surgeries from 1997-2014 all orthopedic except my gall bladder removal, and while the first couple days post all surgeries egfr takes a hit, it isn’t anything permanent. Go get fixed if possible. Best of luck!

My remedy is not pain pills but is all I can use. (My gut was ruined in the '80s with an anti-inflammatory/Nsaid. I've taken one strong pain killer in the mid 90s and it simply took the edge off for 30mins & then the pain came back worse.)

If I swim or simply immerse myself in a 32 degree Celsius heated pool for at least 30minutes, it will take the edge off my chronic pain for 24 hours.

Admittedly, going to a pool is not convenient and if your pain is severe, it may not work.

Hope you find or have already found, something that works, novemberlady1.

Here is an article I found a few years ago. I started seeing a pain management doctor two years ago and was prescribed Hydrocodone. That is one of the meds mentioned in the article. My neph knows I take it and did not say not to. He knows of my back pain. the-hospitalist.org/hospita...
