2 kidneys transplanted for 77 hours this time. Impressive!

Impressive, yes, but the kidneys weren't clearing creatinine properly. The doctors surmise that this "may" be due to the recipient's brain dead status.

Yup, this is a real concern that they will have to address. I wonder if that was an issue with the previous tests done too. I think they were mainly just at the stage of seeing if it wouldn’t be rejected instantly. Still much work to do.

You are right and that detail escaped me, I didn't read the study that was linked at the bottom of the article or any of them. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi...

I am far from knowing enough about kidneys metabolic pathway to have an opinion but , it seems like a reasonable theory knowing that the brain produce many messengers. My understanding is that they also admit that the genetics changes may need improvements.

I don't think it need to be perfect and I can't wait to see how it perform over longer period.

I can just hear PETA's outrage at this news. As a lifelong vegetarian/vegan I don't know that I would feel right about it for myself.

I know what the option would be, but still. I don't think I could ethically rationalize it. I wouldn't judge anyone else for doing it if it becomes available.

I would totally do it if necessary to avoid dialysis, but then I'd have to go totally vegetarian out of respect.

I couldn't do it either. I'm pretty much vegan at this point and the thought of eating an animal or using it when there are other options, just can't. I can't say what an other person's choice is.

If you truly wanted to be respectful you'd eat slop LOL!!!! Pigs aren't vegetarians, they are omnivores. But that was still funny, thanks!!!!

Yeah. In the future people will be like "You know Carl? He's such a great guy. A real pig."

We used to call rude guys "disgusting pigs". Pigs will finally get the respect they deserve. My friend has a farm animal rescue and she rescued a few pigs. They are truly smart and sweet animals. If people personally knew some pigs they may find giving up bacon on a plant-based diet much easier to do.
