Sodium Phosphate in frozen turkey.

Have you noticed that sodium phosphate is injected into frozen turkeys? (Maybe not all, but the one I bought did.) It preserves the meat, makes it retain water soo you don't have to baste it, makes the turkey look better, and saves the store money. There should be a warning label on the package, just like there are for cigarettes.

Not everything has sodium added when it's frozen. Since I found out I had CKD and that most labels don't have phosphorus in its many forms on their labels and the dark meat isn't the best for a CKD patient, I buy a fresh breast only and never frozen. Even then, you have to read the label to be sure they are truly organic or free-range. Organic birds are best and while a bit more expensive they are healthier to eat.

I stopped eating prepared food in 2016 completely. It is more expensive but I also have not taken antibiotics or any medicine since 2016. The I was 176, size 12 pounds at 5'3" because of all the VA medicine for migraines ( caused by chemicals in foods) allergies, asthma, and reactions to medicines & chemicals ( found out it was due to toxic exposure in military) Now I'm 118- 120 pounds and a healthy size four. MCT and grass fed butter and milk helped drop the weight rapidly. I started on those in 2016, I had only dropped to a size 8 by 2017, now a four. It's worth the extra money. I don't smoke, drink or eat any junk food. I don't waste money on frivolous junk. I do not use plastic or aluminum. Only glass, ceramic or stainless. I am healthier and look younger than I did when I was 40 and I'm 55. I do not use chemucals, or chemical soaps or lotions or shampoo, all bar form, organic. Organic toothpaste, no fluoride. Water filter on my apt. Cost $47, replace once a year, water is,sweet and clean like artesian well water. Also my menopause only lasted a year, only a few months of mild hot flashes because I had not used plastic for so many years. Plastic and soy both have chemicals that mimic estrogen . If you are a,woman, do not eat soy, do not use plastic.

Hi BagabonesFelis that's good info. Do you have a website, YouTube channel or newsletter where you share more advice and tips?

Unfortunately no. I used to be in Quora but the Maga crowd ganged up on me reporting factual medical and scientific articles as spam by the hundreds, and even though I fought every one and got them restored, Quora decidedly punish me and ban my account even though I reported every abuse of their reporting procedure. Most of us on Quora were leaving already as it has become a hate filled cesspool of ignorance, bigotry, misogyny and racism. So good riddance. I have Facebook under Leo Roars. I posted my healing of third degree burns there through the entire 22 day process. Never went to the VA. Used Himalayan pink salt, local raw wildflower honey, pure aloe vera gel from my garden of aloes and calcium bentonite clay. No scar at all. I have photos and video of it as documentation. I'm writing a book on Earth based healing using clays, honey, food grade diatomaceous earth, Aloe, seasonal fresh organic fruit, veggies ( organic frozen is good too) organic bar soap, and bar shampoo, using raw coconut oil for skin and mct coconut oil for cooking and skin. Hint, next time you get chapped lips DO NOT USE CHAPSTICK, use either coconut mct oil or raw whole coconut oil. Mct coconut oil CAN NOT make you fat, neither can raw coconut oil. It is not processed through the digestive system. It goes through the blood barrier direct to liver for energy and actually turns off the cells fat hoarding process. You could literally drink a quart a day and never gain one day cell, although that's not advised; just making a point. I'll put it this way, when I dieted I gained over 70 pounds, now I eat as much as I want, but none of it is processed, and it's all organic and pasture raised or fresh caught ( salmon, trout, sardines, boar) etc. Bagabones is my Biggest and eldest Feline overlord. Followed by Sgt Badass and the youngest Chew Toy. They eat raw and/ or I dehydrate pasture raised meats as treats.

Thanks for sharing this good information on frozen turkey. As Mr_ K mentions it is in frozen chicken and other such process meats. I checked frozen fish sticks and they had it too.

Phosphate additives are in so many things. This sounds snooty, but I only buy fresh organic chicken and turkey. I had to take out a mortgage for my Thanksgiving bird.... kidding (sort of) . But in the long run, I save on my health.Becoming a label reader is sort of a hobby of mine. Drives people in the store nuts (added bonus) as I stand and read labels. My shock was to see how much stuff was in a no sugar added popsicle. Read what is in those babies. Its hard to get away completely from additives unless you grow your own. The best you can do is become aware and decide what you will consume and how much.

I agree. I never buy anything without checking the label first. Unfortunately with my turkey purchase, I got it with online grocery shopping and there was no indication about the sodium phosphate on the site. I saw it when it was delivered to me. Live and learn!

Where can I find fresh turkey outside of the winter holiday season? I live in a small town in the south we have Walmart, Windixie, Publix, and Aldi. I would have to go over state lines about an hour to get to a Whole foods.

I would have no idea where you would get it. I order it special through a local meat market. By the way, a lot of meat form Walmart has added preservatives in it. I would not buy meat there.

They have grass fed and organic as well. I buy grassfed, pasture raised, organic beef hotdogs and burgers, fermented real, organic sauerkraut, grass fed, pasture raised eggs, milk and beef, pasture raised chicken, wild caught salmon and skip Jack tuna. So they do have healthy foods, you just have to do the research and seek them out.

You could look up pasture raised Turkey or chicken farms. They now have them all over the U.S. Check where you live, many have delivery service, in fact Google " Where can I order pasture raised organic meats? ". I can't afford the service and it's too much meat for one person, don't get me wrong, I love meat, fish and foul, esp wild boar. If they had a service that you could choose how many months between I would do it, but most are monthy, It's just too much. I only have a half sized fridge with a freezer even one turkey wouldn't fit in, my landlord held it until I needed to defrost it. Wild turkey and grass/ pasture raised/ fed is not as huge as force fed mass produced Turkey's. Even chickens are leaner. These birds are not naturally gmo corn eaters. Wild chickens and turkeys are omnivores. They eat a lot of insects, seeds, nuts, worms and even small snakes, lizards, frogs, etc. I hope this helps.

One of the things I have noticed is that it is very hard to find phosphorous on nutrition labels or even when you look up the nutrients. Potassium is now required. Maybe someday they will mandate it.

Look it up online, for example: " Does this brand/product have ( name chemical or ingredient) in it? "
