Awesome question! Wish I knew the answer. Easy question for a nephrologist.

It depends upon the specific medication. Some are metabolized by kidneys some by liver. You'd need to talk to a pharmacist or nephrologist directly. Blessings

Hi there, Sdillow! A good person to ask if your medical team is not being helpful may be the pharmacist at your drug store. I’ve tried researching it online, but I think I may have stumbled onto a doctor’s website and from what I was able to only slightly understand, is, it depends on the type of medication. It didn’t state whether it was referring to psychiatric medication, or heart, blood pressure, etc. However, that is a very good question. One that has not ever occurred to me. But, as I say, a pharmacist should be able to answer that one. They are very knowledgeable with regard to a variety of drugs and how they are processed both by the kidneys and dialysis. Good luck, and let us know how you make out on that one. I’m curious to know! Lol! God bless. 😊👍

Dear S_dillow,

I WAS 'On' Dialysis, for four years, prior to my Transplant- so I, should at least, have some knowledge 😋.

As stated above, it Depends on the 'Type' of Drug, but also How Much 'Residual' Kidney Function, you have. Other 'Factors', that can affect 'Drug Breakdown' included the 'Type' of Dialysis that you are on, the Duration of your Sessions. (It also Helps if you DO, in fact, Attend ALL your Dialysis appointments!)

Beyond, all this, there IS a 'level' of Luck..... No Honestly! The Experts, or course, wouldn't call this 'Luck', it would All be, to do with, your own Body- no two the same.... Basically, yes Luck.

I know that, everyone here, sends you our and Very Best Wishes.

Hi again Sdillow! If you google Dialysis of Drugs, it will offer up a website for pharmacists, that’s called NPA, I believe. I’ll be honest, I didn’t quite understand much of the information I was reading (these are some of the downfalls of being moronic from time to time. Lol!) But, I believe it does have to do with the type of drug, and solubility, protein and such. As the others have most likely, already advised you, it would best for you to just ask your pharmacist, and / or your doctor(s). At least that way, you can have it explained to you in laymen’s (hope I spelled that right. Lol!) terms. This is something you’ll want to be aware of. All the best to you! God bless. 😊👍

I would ask your psychiatrist or psychologist (you probably see the former, I do). My psychiatrist is pretty savvy about antidepressants and kidneys.

You might consider talking to your pharmacist too. For a long time I didn't know they are doctors! Doh! Some are pretty wise!
