Can Gfr level decline ina few months?

Hello, my husband a few months ago found out he had a gfr of 49 creatine 1.45 everything was fine referred to a nephrologist. He just took more bloodwork and gfr is 36 now and creatine is 1.85, BUN level high, red blood cells low? Is it normal for the kidneys or gfr to decline in 3 months? A egfr of 49 to 36 now? We see the doctor this week. My mom had suffered a lot from this disease and I'm scared for him now. Isn't it supposed to slowly decline in years?

It's normal for someone with CKD.

If you are in the USA, go to davita.com and register you and your husband for a free, 90-minute Kidney Smart class in your area. It will calm your fears and give you information and resources to slow the progression of CKD.

Hi Olivia,

Nope, it is not normal but there are many factors that can cause the drop. So please have him see the doctor and let us know what you find out. We are just filled with great advice and support and will be here for you both.

Just like Bassetmommer said, nope. My gfr fluctuated all the time between mid 60’s and high 50’s for years. The first of October my gfr was 58. The first of December it was 34. And my creatinine went from 1.1 to 1.6. I’ve been waiting since then to see a nephrologist. My appointment is the 29th so I’m curious to see what has happened in nearly 2 months since my last draw. Get to a dr, ask lots of questions, and do research. Knowledge is power.

Thank you yes my husband went to the doctor and he is to have another blood draw in a week. I don’t know what the doctor said because I didn’t go cause my husband didn’t want me to go and when he got home he didn’t tell me much. I’m sure what happened but my husband doesn’t seem worried so maybe it’s not a big deal but I know my husband was a gfr of 49 in November and now January it’s 36 his bun was 1.45 now it 1.84. I hope all goes well with u. Olivia

Perhaps he needs a gentle reminder that you are his wife and whatever is going on with him physically directly affects you. He may not want to accept what his dr is saying but you very much have the right to know what is going on with him considering this is a serious disease and it also impacts your life quite a bit. You should have the knowledge of the progression of his disease so you can also be prepared to deal with any issues that may come up, diet change and what his stage is. He may be feeling just fine so he doesn’t think this is a big issue. When his next appointment rolls around simply tell him that you’re going along. CKD affects the entire family. Not just the person who has it. Keep us posted!
