Good news

It has been one year since I first saw my renal dietician and met with the nephrologist. She said back then to prepare for dialysis within six months. I had been progressively declining monthly. Went from stage 3 to 4 within a short time.

I am so thrilled to report my labs today from the last three months were wonderful. Improvement across the board. GFR up one point. Maybe not a huge amount but it so much better than down. Creatinine down just a tiny bit. Iron, hemocrit and hemoglobin all improved to a "normal level." Potassium and phosphorus declined slightly but still at a high normal. White blood count down also. Glucose levels are normal and have been now for over 6 months. I am even cutting down on my diabetic medications. Lost 38 pounds (and if you add the pounds I have gained and lost again, its a whole lot more) Feeling really good. So my kidney friendly diet works. Just sharing a victory.

Thanks to everyone here who has been so supportive.

That is awesome! Can you tell what you’re eating.? I had cut out all dairy and meat but my hemoglobin and hematocrit went down and so I was afraid I wasn’t getting enough protein or right nutrition.

HI Bunkin,

I eat salad every other day and then sometimes every day. I eat red leaf and green leaf lettuce with red and green peppers. I eat a lot of veggies such as cauliflower, onions, carrots, zuchinni which I roast or grill. I leech broccoli once a week. I eat oatmeal twice a week. I eat egg whites and sometime one whole egg with the whites. I eat cheese. Very very little chicken or turkey or even fish. I do not eat red meat at all. I can;t eat beans or legumes because of the potassium so I too have limited protein. But my renal dietician said to keep it down below 60 and I seem to come close most days.

Using a tracker really helps. It lets you know if you are getting what you need. I use Davita's tracker right now and have used fitness pal.

I also find Davita diet tracker to be a big help.

Excellent! I am going to try to roast the veggies for variety.

What temp?

I cut up the veggies in big chunks into a bowl. Add olive oil, pepper, and sometimes turmeric, paprika, or other times fresh basil and thyme, and really yummy was a bit of red pepper flakes or fresh jalapeno peppers. Spread out on a large cookie tray. Bake at 350 for about 20 to 30 minutes until tender. I also do the same thing and then grill them on the BBQ in a metal basket I have for that. You can buy them and they are designed for grilling at hot temps with small things. I pile the vegges in the basket according to the ones that need the longest to cook, like cauliflower and put the fastest ones on top later such as asparagus.... which is fabulous grilled.

I used kidney appetite which was awesome. Then they discontinued it. Have since learned it was put out by a phosphate binder company and when their meds went generic, they cut the app! All about the money!! I will look at Davita tracker. I have downloaded a few but they never end up being helpful. Thanks for the info!

I am a believer now in diet. Had my lab work done yesterday. GFR 6 months ago 52, yesterday 60. Creatine 1.08, yesterday .95. I have only cut out beef and pork. Still eating chicken, turkey and fish. I need to lose 70# and the scale isn't budging. Using myfitnesspal at 1200 calories. Eat lots of veggies. I exercise daily, walking and stationery bike, so may need to change this up. Congrats on your numbers.

Fantastic! Stick with your renal diet, hydrate, and exercise. You could delay dialysis as long as possible!
