Hey

I am a 44 year old female, healthy, exercise, no alcohol.

About 6 month ago i could not keep any foods in and felt so ill, i went to dr and had bloods done and they come back in ONE DAY!! I knew it was bad .. they were bad but not that bad as i had been taking naproxen so they put it down to that.

So i came home threw out all my naproxen and any other tablets i had and i went whole 6

Month with no pain meds, loads water, no alcohol, healthy eating...

So imagine my shock when i have another blood test yesterday and i just got call saying it same???

Is there any food, supplements, herbs anything that can give a false kidney test as i do take alot of supplements?

Any help please to try to get my next blood test good??

Id love to be able to tell you but all i got was a call from the receptionist at my doctor saying my renal blood test had come back borderline?? That was it....

I have a month to sort it before next one in dec. no advice... no why?

So i am trying to find reasons i could have a false blood ie something i ate or drank or supplements.

It abit of a stab in the dark as there no reason why i should have this ???

Im on no meds.

I take supplements,vit c,magnesium, glucosamine, vit d.

I eat really healthy. No gluten no dairy . Im fit. No alocohol. Exercise 3-4 times a week.

Just really wanted some advice on healthy kidney

Hi Lulububs,

Unfortunately, large doses of NSAIDs can cause permanent kidney damage. Although in some cases it might be possible to increase your kidney function, your biggest goal now is to keep from declining further which it sounds like you are doing. Keep up the healthy eating, but you may need to change your diet according to your test results. For example, depending on your results, if you are now in stage 4 or 5 of CKD, and your phosphorus and potassium results are high, you would need to limit your intake so you may need to eat smaller portions of "healthy" fruits and veggies. There are a lot of variables as Fatbuddy pointed out.

I think mine could b due to to naproxen for a bad back. I took them fir couple years so it could well b that.

The receptionist told me the dr said “ do not worry it is borderline??” What does that mean.

Drink lots of water... no more nsaids which i gave up 6 months ago.

I take alot of supplement but i am goin to stop them as i was told by a friend not all supplements are good so hopefully that will give me more of a idea of what we really are dealing with next lot of bloods.

It sounds like it was caused by your meds. Probably a good idea to do some more research on your supplements before taking anymore as some can help, but some can hurt your kidneys.

Ask for a copy of your results so that you can see for yourself what they are. If you are in the US, then many times you can sign up online to get your results, if not, have them mail them to you. Many times the doctors will tell you not to worry when you are above 60 for your GFR, however 60 to 89 is stage 2. Although it is considered "mild", if you start making life changes now, you can protect your kidneys for many years to come! It sounds like from what you are saying, that you are doing all the right things now that you have stopped the pain meds, so if you keep up the good work of living healthy, then your kidneys should stay functioning at a good level. You will never have perfect function again as the damage is likely already done, but kidneys can function fine on less than perfect function which is why your doctor is probably saying not to worry. However, learning as much as you can so you can be your own advocate is always the best policy. Visit Davita.com and you can find out lots of information. davita.com/education/kidney... :)

When I found out mine was so bad I bought a program called kidney disease solution and followed it for my disease. It gives supplements you should take, exercises, meditation, and other good information. Although my GFR is 8 now. I started at 12 three years ago and my doctor says I’ve beaten the odds. If you need information on how to get it, let me know. Prayers for you. God can do anything 😀😀

Stop taking ALL ibuprofen-based pain meds. Even Hydrocodone (Norco) comes in ibuprofen and acetaminophen classes. Tylenol 3 or just acetaminophen is all I was told to take for pain.

Do you have high blood pressure? If you don't know from day-to-day, then invest in a portable blood pressure cuff machine and test it.

Please don't let doctors or nurses get away with explaining "generic" terms like "borderline" about your health. At least in the U.S., patients have rights to request their medical records, labs, etc. Ask the receptionist to fax/mail the results to you, or ask to speak to the doctor's nurse and go over the numbers.

My Nephrologist says that the majority of general practitioners don't know much about kidney issues. If you need a referral (b/c of insurance reasons) to a specialist (Nephrologist), get one and ask that your labs be sent to that soecialist and make an appointment with that doctor and cancel your other "borderline" doctor.

From what I have read, "drowning" your system with water is not a cure, will not help and may even be detrimental if you have high blood pressure. Your kidneys regulate how to filter fluids and if your nephrons are waning, then water isn't going to help. It just puts more stress on your kidneys to deal with fluids.

My Neph says "2 quarts of liquid (which includes soups, jello, anything that dissolves to a fluid), plus whatever you urinate in a day" is all the liquids I shld consume in a day. That's only 8 cups (U.S.) of water (if I am calculating correctly. Weights and measurements are not my strong suit!). A "cup" = 8 oz.; not a tumbler full of water!).

Be your own best advocate. Do research online. However, I would force that doctor's office to give you your lab results so that when you see the doctor again, you can have your questions about your "borderline" numbers ready to ask.

BTW: one of my symptoms when I first realized I was "really" sick was vomitting every day. I lost 50-60 lbs. within 6 months without dieting. It was all from vomitting.

I also had a slight urine taste in the back of my throat from time to time during the day. My urine was smelly as well. These were my symptoms and everyone is different.

Good luck on your journey.

No my blood pressure is low?

Not overly low it is always the same but it is low.

I stopped all my supplements and any drugs, also i drink 2 litres drink a day as i was told dehydration can give a bad reading which i was as i had just got up and gone to clinic before work do i had not drank anything in over 8 hours!

I stopped taking naproxen over 6 months ago.

Ive tried to lower potassium and sodium so hope that next bloods in dec are better??

Finger crossed

No, don't get dehydrated either!

You are younger than me, and my blood pressure used to be low as well. When I hit my fifties, a doctor or two would say my blood pressure was high (probably compared to my record of low blood pressure).

As you probably learned, diabetes and a history of high blood pressure are the top two major causes of declining kidney function.

My Nephrologist put it this way: "You could drink a whole swimming pool of water (not advisable b/c you can die from drinking too much water - like alcohol), but it isn't going to flush out your kidneys of 'bad' stuff that is causing Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Your nephrons are damaged and no supplement, pill or elixir will cure them."

Watch your ankles for swelling (it can indicate too much fluid retention) and chk for dehydration by pulling up the skin on the back of your hands. If the skin goes back into place immediately, you are hydrated. If it stays in a peak, you may be dehydrated.

Did you get your lab results from the "boderline" doctor?

Lulububs profile image
Lulububs in reply to TaffyTwoshoes27

Nope they will not give them to me as they said “ there no need to have them as they just say “ borderline kidney reading please review in month” Apparently that all lab has sent?

So the doctor said “ come back on 21st December for another one, no alcohol( i dont drink) , no tablets, no supplements as they can give false reading and make sure u drink this time before u go as if u not drunk for 8 hours all the toxins are sitting in ur kidney and can give a false reading”

So im doin everything they say, i eat really healthy anyway, i keep fit, i dont drink, the only thing i can think that could have done some damage is the naproxen?

Il give it all till then and see what happens.

If i do all what they say and it still come back borderline they have said it will b renal clinic next to see why anyway so until then il just relax and see what happens.

I was just wandering in original post if anyone knew any supplements u defo must not take or anything that can help my bloods.

You need to be your own advocate. Demand your doctor to explain exactly what is going on. No one here should be prescribing or diagnosing your condition. Something as simple as being dehydrated can impact a lab. Borderline and coming from a receptionist is not not enough information. Borderline what? Big difference between borderline at stage 2 to being at stage 4. So find out from your doctor what you are dealing with. Then inquire about the supplements you are taking. Some vitamins are good for kidneys so before you stop everything, find out from your doctor.

You sound like you take pretty good care of yourself so I would think that once you find out exactly what is going on you will be able to deal with it.

Please come back and tell us what you found out and then we can help support you with advice from what works for people in this community.

Good luck.

Bassetmommer is spot-on!! Call them and make them tell you precisely what is happening. We all have a right to our medical records. Call this Dr back and make someone give you a REAL answer. Why should you stress out if it's nothing?

One "off" result means absolutely nothing anyway! Those tests are run in automated machines. You have no idea if the test simply was a dud or not! They could have even mixed your sample with someone else's.

Dr's are in such a rush these days (and it sounds like yours was too), that you need some information and a plan. You don't need one "borderline" result (which can mean anything), a half thought out treatment for something that is far from confirmed.

Not only should people here not be prescribing or diagnosing your condition, they should realize that you have absolutely no data in hand to even indicate the severity (IF ANY) of what this test is all about.
