It's official! Update on transplant!

It's official! I'm slated to get my live-donor transplant in early December of this year! I'm very excited and nervous all at the same time. Despite only being on dialysis for 11 months, it's been quite the rollercoaster and there were a few times we had to ponder the possibility of me going back to hemo from PD. It also took a little longer for me to get cleared between having perotinitis and bad acid reflux, but thankfully the infection cleared up and I have my acid reflux under control now with medication.

For those of you who don't know, my step sister decided to start the donor process in March, and she was cleared in September. She was the 4th and last person to go through the donor process and I'm very fortunate and lucky that she changed her mind to go through this process! We're both very excited that this is finally happening, and our family and friends are excited too!

It's been a long journey, and I'm more than ready to see what it's like to have a functioning kidney since it's been so long! Thank you everyone for your ongoing support!

Thank you! It's definitely a step, even if it isn't the final one (given my young age I'll need at least one more transplant...but that's far away).

If you don't mind be asking how old are you? I'm 38 diagnosed at 21 even though I was born with kidney disease had no symptoms.

You never know with modern advances you may only need one that's my hope for myself. On the transplant list as my live donors didn't work out.

All the best and keep us posted x

I just turned 21 this year! I was born with a single kidney that had complications from my VATERs syndrome, so I wasn't even expected to make it this long at all, let alone stretch my kidney to 20 years old. As of now, live donor kidneys can last 15-20+ years if you take care of them properly, but since I plan on having a long and happy life, it's a given that I'll more than likely need a second transplant, if not also a third. I'm hopeful that by the time that happens, stem cell resesrch will be able to make kidneys and other organs so that rejection meds aren't needed and the kidney will more than likely last a lifetime.

Fingers crossed for medical advances. Sounds like you've done an amazing job making your existing kidney work for as long as it did. You've beaten the odds once let's hope you do it again.

I was at the transplant games this year as a volunteer and one of the recipients I was talking too has had is kidney for 38years and still working at gfr of 60 which is amazing.

Good luck with the opportunity and let us know how you get on.
