Whats your newest favorite food, and what, if anything did you have to give up?

In changing your diet to include kidney friendly foods, what new foods did you discover that you can enjoy? I found that bread is now something I do include in my meals but not just any old bread. I have been seeking fresh baked, home made style wonderful breads and artisan breads. Much like wine shopping, I seek out bakeries and craft fairs looking for new and delicious loaves. I have to be careful because of the carbs, but a thick slice with my salad at night makes a wonderful meal. I was eating low fat veggie wraps, but that got old real fast. Sort of like wrapping you egg salad in a newspaper. The wraps were 60- 90 calories but not satisfying at all. I also switched to whipped butter since it has have the calories of regular butter.... and I LOVE butter. Makes not having potatoes of any kind less painful.

There isn't enough bandwidth to list all of the foods I've had to give up. I guess the food type I miss the most is Italian. I used to enjoy going out to dinner at a great Italian restaurant. However, with CKD there are too many things that harm my kidneys to make it even an occasional meal.

I can't think of anything that has the title of being a "favorite" food. I eat lots of cabbage, vegetables, chicken, fruit, and with no added salt to anything, I've learned to accept and enjoy what I eat to stay healthy.

Foods like since pre-dialysis: I have tried corn tortillas and like the recipes can use with them. Also crave mushrooms but have to cut back on quantity now due to potassium restriction. There are other food can have in renal diet I have come to like also. Instant Rice dishes come to mind also as easy to fix.

Being that I also have food intolerances has been a real challenge, hoever I am fortunate that I don't have to restrict potassium or phosphorus though I do try to control portion size.

For me, the experimentation has been kind of fun. Last night I had zucchini, onions and cabbage stir fried in macadamia oil with a dash of worchishire sauce then a small handful of chopped walnuts and diced candied paypa mixed in. Sounds strange, but it was delicious, low calorie and low sodium even with the sauce. Seems my taste buds have changed since not eating packaged foods and don't miss the sodium as much anymore.

That sounds very interesting and tasty. Why macadamia oil, may I ask?

I use whatever coldpressed non gmo or organic brand is on sale. Right now I have Ellyndale which I got from Sprouts. It's expensive about $10 for a 16 oz bottle, but it is lower in Omega 6 which causes inflamation.

Oh, thank you. I did not realize that Omega 6 causes inflammation. I will have to research that as I have psoriatic arthritis. Last thing I need is something more causing inflammation.

There are a ton of articles out there about it, but here is a quick one that shows several things that increase inflammation. Hate to tell you, but gluten is up there on the list :( but, everyone is different so maybe it doesn't affect you that way. arthritis.org/living-with-a...

Thank you for the link. I find it interesting that if you read the actual information about omega 6, it says if you consume EXCESS amounts of Omega 6 it can cause inflammation. What, I wonder if excess amounts?

I think the issue is that 99% of package or processed foods contain one of the oils mentioned that are high in omega 6. If you eat mainly home cooked foods with no oil or olive oil or raw foods then you probably aren't getting an overload in omega 6. Our bodies need Omega 6, but our society has gone to a fast food mentality. It's hard to eat all home prepared healthy foods. It takes time and money and a lot of willpower. Those of us who work, have families to take care of, volunteer or social commitments often grab something on the go, and more than likely it has safflower, soy or canola oil, even if it is organic etc. Trying to cut back on those things and supplimenting with fish or flax oil can put the omega 3 to 6 ratio into balance, but discuss with your doctor before adding any suppliments.

i know how you feel....what can we eat thats good without guilt...i snack on celery sticks and popcorn...no salt with a light touch of butter....apples are also agreeing with me as well as bluberries and strawberries...i sip on coconut water ...do you have any more ideas ?....stage 4...no dialysis yet

I like the bread too, but so many of them are full of sodium. Have to bake it myself, I guess.

I HAVE LEARNED TO LOVE CABBAGE STEAKS WITH GREEN AND RED CABBAGE, SEASON IT WELL WITH A LITTLE OLIVE OIL . I ALSO EAT A LOT OF CUCUMBER. IT FILLS YOU UP AND IS LOW IN CAL AND GOOD FOR YOUR KIDNEYS. I HAVE CHANGED MY DIET TO A LOT OF VEGETABLES AND HARDLY ANY FRIED FOODS. I HAVE GIVEN UP DARK SODAS AND EAT A LOT LESS MEAT AND MY EGFR WENT FROM 17 TO NOW 34.
