Albumin and antioxidants

Cathy12156dsrjad profile image

Just read about turkey being no good for us kidney patients??? What? And antioxidants are needed like vitamins I guess? And keep Albumin up always? Questions about all of these. Any help would so greatly be appreciated. I am getting overwhelmed by all the info. on what to do and not to do. I know you say use certain sites and I do but some are promoted from these sites, etc. just listen to you guys and dr. I guess but I have a lot of time to read and find myself wanting to help myself and then I read all this and wonder what in the world. I can’t remember half of it. God has to have this one. He can remember what I can’t (got to smile)😄. Thanks

Stay calm and maybe I can help you deal with everything. If you live in the USA please go to davita.com

On their home page, you will find information on a Kidney Smart class held in your area. It's a free 90-minute class and will well worth your time and effort to attend. You can learn much from the class usually taught by a kidney professional and they will answer many of your questions and provide you with a workbook that is a great resource for you.

However, if you live outside the USA, try going to kidneyschool.org/mods

These mods are for you to watch and learn at your own pace and will also explain everything you need to know about CKD and get you on solid ground. When you download the mods you can save them to your computer and go back to them as often as possible to refresh your memory.

Do you have the opportunity to see a renal dietician to help you understand food choices? The Internet can be very confusing. Food choices depend on what stage of CKD you are in, especially if you are on dialysis or not. Although turkey is a lower calorie protein, it also has purine which may not be good for kidneys. But if you are on dialysis, you need to consume more protein than say someone in stage 3 or 4 and then turkey might be a good choice. Keep asking questions as that's how you learn.

My dietician has only told me about sodium, potassium, sugar, etc. she also told me to eat a 1400 a day calorie diet with 89 grams of protein. She figured this up on My fitness pal and I keep record. She has shown me recipes and some foods that are bad for me. I am stage 3b. I don’t know the correct questions to ask her and she asks if I have any further questions. I am learning though. I really appreciate answers like these that are yes bad or no good. That helps. Thank u. You all know what u have experienced and what it is like and I appreciate u all

I have a prescribed 7 page diet I follow and track it on Davita Planner and Tracker (under tools on web site) and it helps me. However I find that the requirements for nutrition amount is different from my diet. I stick with the diet but make sure I am within diet parameters. Assume diet is tailored to ones needs?

Cathy, there is a link that will supply you all the nutritional values to almost anything including name brands, ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/ I use it to verify what I am reading on other pages. For example, one "Doctor" website said radishes were outrageous when it comes to potassium..... not true at all. Then I see that many diets for kidney patients include a lot of protein and hidden salt. Also not so good. I too use My Fitness pal, but be careful relying on their database. The input is from the users and sometimes the nutritional value is off or missing. Rarely do you see anything noted for potassium, so its best to check on some other certified site if you have questions about content of a food. For example, I never knew zucchini has more potassium than a banana. Keep those questions coming.

Very good points Bassetmommer, I am finding the same thing on potassium an phosphorus in food. Also on other data bases finding have to do more research. It is like a part time job.
