Last month I started the gym, I have lost 11pound although I can't see this when I look at myself and recently everytime I look at myself I just want to cry and a lot of the time I do. Its making me emotional all the time and people around me have noticed a change in my mood. What's wrong with me?:/

Hi AmberG,

I'm not very clear what your trying to do.

If you're trying to lose weight, I'm not sure if you've looked at the NHSChoices live well lose weight pages, found out your BMI, decided on how much weight you want to lose, or if you've started the 12-week plan.

It may be that you joined the gym to improve your physique, build muscle, or whatever.

However, one thing I will say is that getting emotional about it won't help your weight loss efforts very much. (if that is what you're trying to do)

If weight loss is your aim, I'd suggest you read the NHS pages, made some decision about what your going to do about being overweight (if you are) and then make a commitment to yourself, your body and your health and well being and get on the weight loss bus.

Lots of good free advice and a 12 week plan from the NHS and also lots of stuff on these blogs from people who are actually doing it about subjects such as setting targets, plotting milestones, making a plan, etc., etc.

I'm coming up to the end of my 9th week (on Friday) and through taking control of my eating and a pretty serious upping of the exercise, I have lost about 11.5 Kgs and put on a fair bit of muscle. (It's O.K., Mr Universe hasn't got anything to worry about from me for a long, long time yet!).

But you know, you can put on muscle and it not show very much because it's still sheathed in fat. But as you body fat levels drop, and your BMI goes down, you'll discover the bone and muscle that's been hiding behind it all.

As is said on this blog quite often, you didn't put on the excess weight overnight, so you're not going to lose it overnight either. It's a process. It's a journey.

Good luck.

Sounds like you need a consultation with your GP. My body image andrelationship with food is complicated. But I guess we're not alone AmberG. It could be fear of failure, loss of some kind, or it could go deeper. Seriously do see your GP and get some early counselling. Meanwhile take care of yourself. Be kind to yourself. Keep up the exercise which is proven to have beneficial impact on mood. Let us all know how you get on and good luck
