Hi mingroo,

Let's be clear - despite the sensationalistic adverts that certain companies use, 'lose weight fast', and all that nonsense - losing weight fast is one BAD idea.

About the maximum you should be losing a week (averaging it out) should be in the order of about 2 lbs or 1 kg. You'll probably lose weight faster than that in the first couple of weeks or so, but that's o.k. because it slows down after that initial spurt.

If you are 3 stone overweight, then you didn't gain that in a month, so you won't lose it in a month in any healthy way.

So I would say that if you're looking at a period of one month then your maximum weight loss shouldn't be more than about 4 or 5 kilos or so - which is about 3/4 of a stone.

My own total weight loss target is a tad over 4 stone (26 kgs) and I'm allowing 6 months (26 weeks) for it.

Even if you lost 3 stones (19 kgs) in such a short time scale, you would very likely put it back on quite soon afterwards and yo-yo dieting is not good for you.

Furthermore, I can't see how you could achieve such a fast weight loss, unless you used a Very Low Calorie Diet (VCLD), which should only be used under direct medical supervision as there are real risks attached to doing that.

If you intend to proceed with it, I would strongly recommend you discuss it with a doctor.

My honest advice it to not even try.

If you read the NHSChoices live well lose weight pages, I think you'll probably get the idea of what is a sensible approach to weight loss.

Hi i was just wondering how you lost a stone in a week?x

Hi louise,

That's not that difficult to do, actually. Get down the gym eveyday, be really active when you're not in the gym and eat very little.

Net result is that you'll probably lose the weight.

And also probably end up feeling really bad - tired and sick and possibly nauseous and /or constipated. In the longer term it can lead to other problems. Which is why VLCD's are only really used for people whose overweight is a bigger health risk than the consequences of a VLCD.

You see your body has various survival mechanisms. One of them is what you might describe as the 'famine response' - when food seems to have gone short, it tries to store what it has to keep you alive until you find a food source. So, the problem is you'd be fighting your body's own natural mechanisms to store food and keep you minimally active until the famine is over. As you probably know, if you eat too little, your blood sugar drops too low and that prompts your body into fat storage mode.

Ironically, most overweight people - including myself - got there due to the body's 'feast response'. Food is plentiful, so store it as fat for when it isn't. Which is a fine natural response. Or was when we were all cave dwellers.

However, nowadays we eat as if everyday is a feast and so the fat gets stored and then added to, and added more to ... until it becomes a health risk and dysfunctions our day to day living.

I once lost 13lbs in a week when I attended a boot camp, it basically consisted of a diet of approximately 1100kcals a day, no carbohydrates except for those contained in fruit and vegetables and a hell of a lot of exercise.

We would be up out at 7am each day and exercise in four separate sessions through until around 17:00 in the evening when we would have our evening meal then go for a long walk.

If you are desperate to lose a stone in a week have a look at the site...

Be warned it isn't cheap and you have to really give it your all.

I do agree with 'Hidden' above, trying to lose 3 stone in a month will put your health at risk, slow and steady wins the race. I imagine if you executed a VLCD for an extended period you would feel and look like s*** too.

This just sounds dangerous and unhealthy, if you want to be healthier and slimmer for life then it takes hard work, determination and a lot longer. Quick fixes are great but not long term and i really recommend doing it the healthy way as you will feel so much better as opposed to starving yourself and pushing yourself too hard for a short period of time only to gain it back, with the nhs plan you could probably do it over the 12 weeks but in my opinion 1 month for 3st is unrealistic and dangerous to your health. Im sorry its not the response you want but i think its the best advice possible
