Kick starting my weight loss battle

Hello everybody,

I'm starting a new job soon, so I decided to lose weight before my first day in office. I weigh 187 lbs for a stature of 5 ft 7 in. I need to lose 44 lbs ! I stopped buying a cooky at the supermarket. This is a positive first step, isn't it ? I also try to walk more by sometimes going to a distant supermarket and walking up and down the stairs at a parking to burn more calories. I don't run because I have a back pain that may get worse. I sometimes jog over a short distance too.

Hi Nobu,

You're on the right track. Are you following the new NHS diet? It's here nhs.uk/weightloss

Hi Editor,

Thank you very much for a good link. I just added it to my Google Chrome. I hope to use it as well starting tomorrow.

Not buying a cookie is indeed a very positive step. Keep a tally, either on paper or mentally of every positive step you have made and it will put a smile on your face. This weightloss programme talks about rewarding ourselves and I find it motivates me if I make a positive step like you and 'reward' it by acknowledging it.

I walked almost 6000 steps today and I didn't buy a cookie. I finished my supper, but I'm going to teach English at a supermarket. I may walk more after seeing my student. I may put off the reward because I'm afraid I ate a little too much. Your reply is a reward because I just started using NHS. I must balance the reward with workout.

Hi Nobu,

Losing that sort of amount of weight is going to be a journey from being a 187lb person to a 143lb person. You'll feel quite different in a 143lb body!

I'm not great with hard targets, as I'm not keen to set myself up to 'fail' and I don't claim to really know enough about my journey yet. Truth is, I suspect it'll get harder as it goes on, though I'm relayy rather pleased with the progress to date. In two weeks I've lost about 4 Kgs which is a bit too fast really, but I think I've managed to correct the rate of loss.

However, I have set out some (undated) milestones for myself, like passing (downwards) 16 stone, BMI of 30, BMI of 29, etc.

I'm planning to take some of those Hairy Bikers' lower calories fairy cakes into the office to 'celebrate' when I go from officially Obese to merely Overweight, for a bit of a joke.

Hi Doikosp,

Today I walked 8039 steps or 6.1 km (3mi 1391 yd). It's still short of 10 thousand steps, but I consider this to be one of the best distances I walked. I don't know if I lost any weight or not, but it feels good to walk outside.

It's true that you should work out moderately when you're past your zenith. I do Fitness Blender too. You can work out watching the videos. I like NHS because it's full of great advice. It's still cold outside, so we can't stay outside too long. I write on American blog of Team Inspire, Discovery Health. I learned Fitness Blender there.

Thank you Louise67,

Like I wrote above, I walked 8039 steps today. I'm not very tired, so I walked enough to have a sense of accomplishment. This means I don't usually walk enough. I don't eat bread or cookie anymore so normally I should lose weight too. I do Fitness Blender too to speed up my weight loss. Thank you for wishing me luck. I'll do what I can do.

I have a spinal injury so I have back pain too and understand and sypathise. Take a few short gentle walks a day. Even 50 yards , stop to recover, turn round come back. Three or four times a day will keep your metabolism going. Eat a small amount of nuts, fruit, raisins or dates or figs a few times a day. They stem your appetite and contain vital antitoxidants , again also good for your metabolism. Then have a balanced , healthy diet.this has worked so well forvme, having lost 45 pounds in 6 months. I wish you well!

It's impressive that you lost 45 lbs in 6 months ! I also eat balanced, healthy meals three times a day, but I don't go out for walks three or four times a day. I go out every day, but I stay out once I go out. As I have written, I walk a lot because I galvanize my back pain at night and for twenty minutes in town every day. They take my pain away pretty well. I do Fitness Blender too. This website is very good if you want to strengthen your muscles and lose weight.

The key is the effectiveness of what you are doing on your metabolism and is measurable in how much in how much weight you use in what length of time.you may need to step up your intake of fat eating foods. I was surprised to find that I needed to eat some butter and that low fat margarine causes one to put on weight.that olive oil spreads are better That sweeteners cause lack of sleep and that maple syrup is better a's a sweetener and is an antioxidant. Not only have I lost the weight and continue at a pound a week but I am now med free.(apart from painkillers) I don't diet. I cannot walk a's you do, I wish I could but the spinal injury is pretty severe. I was 97 kilos and today weigh 77. I must be doing something right! Just trying to help. I know how wearing it is. I wish you luck

Fellow weightloss travellers,

I find reading about your unique journeys and insight very inspirational. I love how Nobu records and lists the steps she walks daily. I have tried recording 10000 steps and know it is difficult working up to that and doing it and I love reading about Geoffreygreen's ongoing success and how he works around the limitations his spinal injury causes.

It just shows we can all get healthier in our very own way. I know I half-joked about measuring my waist with a ruler the other day, but weightloss is not only measurable in pounds and kilograms but also inches and centimeters. Some times the scales fall silent but the measuring tape continues tightening.

I ate sushi with salmon for dinner. I walked 5641 steps over 2mi 1183yd in the cold so I rewarded myself with a good meal. I think salmon is antioxidant too. I don't put butter or margarine on bread and I drink only soy milk and green tea. I stopped eating bread and cookie. I stopped reading all the newsletters too. I subscribe to too many Emails.

fitnessblender.com/ FitnessBlender is a website with lots of videos that shows you exercises for specific areas of your body. It's still rather hard for me so I do what I can do and soon I find myself out of breath and hot. It's so cold outside that I do it to complement walking outside. Today I walked just 2.4km (=1mi 865yd) or 3156 steps.
