Newbie taking the plunge

Hi all. I've been hanging round on the sidelines for a few weeks, trying to get up the courage to join in. So here I am. I weighed myself this morning (first time for years) and measured my waist (almost burst into tears). The way I see it is that I have two choices: do nothing and keep on being miserable or do something and potentially feel and look better. So I've decided to treat myself as a project! Starting now this minute. Wish me luck!

That’s brave! Finding out the actual numbers doesn’t change where you are at the moment, but it means you have opened your eyes and you are ready to deal with it. And that’s the most important thing - well done! All the very best and good luck.

Thanks N-o-r-d-i! I've just kicked off with a 10-minute workout. Now all I have to do is keep going! Have a lovely day.

Thanks Flo-jo. I stopped smoking with the help of a fabulous NHS group, so I’m hoping to do the same thing here! 😀

Hi and welcome, CDA22 :)

Well done for plucking up the courage to post. Now that you've taken that first brave step, it will be all downhill from here :)

All of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and I hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.

If you haven't already taken it, here's a tour of the forum healthunlocked.com/?tour=true

We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.

Wishing you all the best :)

Thanks for that :)) It's taken me a while, but we've all got to start somewhere!

A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step :)

I think you've hit on a successful approach. 'Treat it as a project' can be highly effective, because it somewhat dissociates the task in hand (emotionally) from 'you' and makes it a series of daily steps and actions.

Doing something (rather than nothing) is often the biggest step. Well done you. 😄

Cheers SofaJockey. Yes - I'm trying not to be too subjective about the whole thing. (Also, a 'project' sounds like fun, whereas a 'diet' doesn't!). Best wishes to you.

It should be a project which turns into a lifestyle or you'll back in the same place sooner than you think. Don't starve yourself or you'll make it harder. If you need to snack chose the right options, like nuts, unsweetened full fat yoghurt, or something else without too many carbs.

Agreed. My plan is to try to lose 8 kilos in 12 months, so I'm taking it steady.

That sounds like a reasonable rate, though it may take a little longer for the skin to tighten up and not look saggy, but the main aim should be to eat a healthier diet. The weight reduction is a by product.

Good luck!! You can definitely do this. We've all taken that same scary first step that you've just taken. You've come to a great place to find support.

Thanks so much, Cosmo501. I was a bit scared to join in, but I think I made the right decision! 😀

Definitely the right decision. I treat myself like a project too. Helps with the mindset of having ups and downs and the occasional set-back.. whilst keeping the end goal in mind.

Yes, I agree, it's good to remember that sometimes the path twists and turns, but that's ok, and just keep going!

Thanks LondonSue 😉. I don't imagine for one moment it's going to be straightforward, but this morning I woke up feeling a bit happier than I did yesterday!

Thanks for posting this. I just signed up today and put up a wee post. It's encouraging to read all the replies to your post! Hope you're still feeling good and celebrating each good choice.

Good luck. Pick a day you want to weigh in and take part. Chill out and take it steady. I first just cut down the amount of food I was eating then moved to healthier versions.
