My first walk.... I cried.

So today I went for a walk. It’s my first in a very long time. I walked 0.6 of a mile. I’m actually quite proud of that. I couldn’t do any more because I was in so much pain and I got really upset halfway out of pure frustration. I wanted to get to the end of the field, but I just couldn’t do it. I think I’ve finally realized how bad it really is. My goal is to do a little bit more of the field each time. 😅

That's the perfect way to do it. You'll soon be sending us a photo from the other end of the field :) Just please, please, please, eat enough, and of the right stuff :)

I’ve been there and got the Tee Shirt . . . Arthritis exacerbated by obesity in my case. I’m a massive fan of walking poles . . . I can go much further and for longer which has to be a good thing 😊

I was also advised that 3x10 minutes is as good as one 30 minute walk

Very well done!!! Remember lost of little steps will build up to a big difference 😊👏👍

Walking poles! Never thought of that, only trouble is I think I’d be too embarrassed and paranoid to use them! Not because I think they’re embarrassing but because id think people would be staring and looking at me judging me. Thinking, she isn’t old enough to have those, she’s just fat. Etc etc. I’m such a worrier I overthink everything! May I ask how much you weighed to get arthritis? And how this was diagnosed? And thank you 🙂

Subtle_badger in reply to SERIOUSFATCHAT

I think you misunderstand. Walking poles are like ski poles, and used by serious walkers. I see them carried by otherwise fit looking older people with backpacks doing long walks striding along the Thames path, and by almost everyone walking the Appalachian trail (a long and serious walk across a mountain range) in Georgia when I visited it 10 years ago. No one is going to judge you.

Anyway, it looks from you picture, like very few people will see you at first. And any way, f' them! Do what you need to do.

I understand totally about the poles, but I see lots of people out walking with them and they look more ‘Sporty‘ than ‘Invalid‘

My health was seriously affected by a road accident many years ago, weight gain led to chronic arthritis in my hips, knees, ankles and arms, (injured side due to damage, non-injured side due to limp and over compensating). I had an ankle fusion last year after a long wait, and Had to lose weight to ensure long term viability. Here’s part of that story healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh....

Hi SFC, using walking poles apart from being a valid aid,is also a sport. "Nordic Walking". When I was relearning how to walk I used the poles and for the early days a personal trainer.

Lots of people, young and older use them. There's no need to go bonkers, go gently, baby steps!

Well done for your 1st walk.

Lavender54 profile image
Lavender54 in reply to SERIOUSFATCHAT

Nordic Walking is actually a sport and are poles to assist one to walk, especially long distance.

However, having said that, anyone can use them, but you do need to follow the instructions on how to use them. I use them all the time and they're brilliant, not for me, as a sport though, just walking the dogs, they really help with walking and getting into the rhythm. Heaps of people , of all age groups use them, in all different places - railway stations, city pavements, promenades, so noone is going to judge you. Give them a try.

Well done you on your first walk. Yay.

Well done 👏🏻👏🏻 You have literally taken the first step now to your weight loss journey. What a lovely walk and a very happy dog :) I'm looking forward to seeing the photo that shows you made it to the end of that path. Doesn't matter how long it takes :)

I think poles look sporty, same as IndigoBlue and they are really helpful. I understand why you feel 'everybody is staring' , but this is something that we need to help you to change. If people stare, try to just smile and carry on. Shame on them if they are being judgemental, but it might just be that actually they admire you for getting out there and giving it a go. If they're people you don't know, chances are you will never meet them again. You are not defined by your weight, please be kind to your self and think about all your good qualities.

Here is a poem I shared here some time ago, I hope you like it,

The first bit of exercise is always the hardest! I hope that now you’re home you feel proud of the fact that you got out there and you did it - no matter how hard it was for you physically or emotionally. And I hope that it’ll give you the courage you need to keep at it! Great job - you’ve got this, you really have! Baby steps.

Hi Seriousfatchat,

That is great, seriously great! You attempted it, you got out there and you did it! A little bit more of the field each times sounds a good focus.

I hear what you're saying about the walking poles. I felt like that with my wheelchair, I only use it when I have to so felt people would judge me because I can walk at other times, somehow people would think I was making it up. I got over this by getting my son to go with me at night, less people about until I got my confidence. Be kind to yourself, I have been so disappointed when I haven't been able to walk but, it doesn't help. Look at this as the new you! And keep your focus, a bit more field each time, you can do this👍

Absolutely Brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 You got this with your sensible attitude of a little bit further everytime you walk that field, even if it’s only a yard more, it’s a yard more than the last time you walked it. We’ll all be at the end of that field when you get there waiting to applaud you. 😊

Well done seriousfatchat! This may sound daft but this works for me with exercise- I write a journal . At the end of the week I add up what I’ve done and try to improve on it. I do mine with my running you can do yours with your walking? You have a lovely dog for company too . Good luck.

Hi SFC. The distance you have done is incredible..well done to you. Its very hard as you are in pain . I'm so pleased you have gone out there and done it.

..keep doing it

It would be fantastic to get to the end of the field .what a goal. Don't be dissapointed if you don't go further every time ..sometimes the same distance is good enough for the first few times.

Be proud of yourself ..your out there changing your life . We look forward to seeing your journey. 👏👏👏👏

What a beautiful walk! You did brilliantly. Don't push too hard- maybe the same again for the next walk - and gain some confidence in what you can do before you increase the distance. You are so much more than you think you are, and I bet your dog loved that you were out there with it.

What beautiful scenery and all that fresh air! Well done for your walk, I too know how daunting these things can be. Looks like your got your dose of Vit D also. Keep up the great work.

As everyone else has said - well done! You've done the hardest part, you've started. Not saying that it's going to be easy from now on, there will be other days of frustration and tears. However, the further into your journey you go, these days will become less frequent and the triumphant days more so.

I understand your feeling of embarrassment with regard to people looking at you but, you know what? If they are being critical or snide, it's they who have a problem, not you. I am 67 and didn't take up running until I was 60. I went out under the cover of darkness thinking that everyone would be staring at an old, overweight biddy. Bit by bit, almost without me noticing, I gained confidence. Then, one day I found myself near to a busy road junction, kitted up in running gear, doing a few stretches whilst I waited for a gap in the traffic and I realised I didn't give a damn who saw me or what they thought. In reality, probably no one noticed me.

So, get some poles, read up how to use them and blow anyone who dares to criticise. What is more important, your health or the opinion of a few dead beats?

Sorry for the long post 😂, but I am so wishing you a healthier life x

Well done and yes best not to push it and go backwards and getting to end of field eventually a good incentive. Looks like a lovely place to go similar to somewhere used to walk Archie......I suppose now can drive to places I can go again but then again dog walk here great especially no one else here.

That is one huge field - but you will get there . . . and back. A little bit more each day. And the poles - I use them all the time when I go walking. They just help me if I am going over uneven ground or on the ups and downs. They just help keep you a bit more stable and it helps with my old knees. Well done!!

Well done ! My Dad always had the saying ' The longest journey begins with but a single step ' which can be applied to a lot of situations . You have more than made the start . I remember my first walk out after an op . The air felt weird . I felt wobbly and challenged but I felt so great afterwards .It is a personal achievement . Feel rightly proud of yourself .

Count your steps out 😊count your steps back sounds daft but not always the same 😊try to add two more each walk, that’s an attainable goal, put your daily achievement on a calendar so you can see your going forward, it’s harder some days than others, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t do those two extra steps but make sure you do them tomorrow 😊
