Recipe: Cabbage pie

I found this recipe on YouTube. It's Russian, I think, and pretty simple and tasty.

I modified the recipe to drop the carbs.

Ingredients for 6 slices

1/2 cabbage

1 medium onion

4 eggs

4 tbsp coconut flour

Handful of grated cheee

Oil/salt/pepper

--

Technique is from the video, except that I whisked the flour into the eggs before adding to the cabbage because coconut flour can clump

If you use plain flour, calories will be about 170, and carbs will go up to 14g per slice.

Looks good I bought a cabbage in my online shop so it’s a good idea. I will have a go at it next week.

Do you mean grated cheese not grated eggs. 😊😊

Ok I knew what you meant I am very good at mistakes when writing.😊

I left the onion out, too. I wonder what else is wrong with my recipe?

I didn’t notice that. I have looked at the video now. I have coconut flour and didn’t know what to use it in apart from pancakes so thanks 😊😊

Yeah, I'm struggling to learn to use coconut flour as it's so different from wheat, but this recipe works. The slight coconutty aroma enhances the dish, though is not very Russian.

I’ve used it for GF friends, found it went a (very) long way so you need a much smaller amount than wheat flour 😊. I hadn’t appreciated it was also low carb 👍

Oooh that looks really good 😊. Not unlike a Spanish Tortilla but using cabbage instead of potatoes

Will definitely try that!

I now realise it's also like the Japanese okonomi, including the cabbage. I just need to slather it in mayonnaise and BBQ sauce.

Does anyone know where I can get bonito flakes? 😁

Not heard of Okonomi . . . Away to google 😂

I presume bonito flakes are a type of chilli?

Nope!! Japanese dried fish 😂

They are superfine, so when put on a hot dish, they move in the rising heat like sea anemones

But I do know where to get them. The lovely Japanese supermarket I've been avoiding since I went low carb.

For the first time in weeks I didn’t buy a cabbage this week, wondering if it would work with leeks? Hmmmm . . . Will let you know 👍

I think it would work, but maybe more of a crepe than a pie, as leek tend to lose it's structure as it cooks more than cabbage. Maybe cut it into rings rather than slices?

But I can think of nothing nicer than a leek pancake! Camera at the ready, please!

Looks fab! Have got coconut flour and haven't used it yet.

It does make it taste a little like a Bounty Bar. You will have to decide if that is a good thing or not! 😀🌴🥥

😂 I'm new to LCHF only on day 11 so I'm searching for people to follow. I lost 6 lb in first week. All water. My socks dont leave dents in my ankles now. So...I'll see you around.

Why not start using the Daily Diary to share your meal plans and pinch ideas, while you're getting established with a lchf way of eating?

The first month of LCHF is brilliant. With intermittent fasting as well, I lost 7kg and 10cm around my waist.

I was so proud, I shared a tops-off selfie! healthunlocked.com/fasting-...

My report of how the pie turned out last night is that I was partially successful 😐It tasted good- a thumbs up from OH - but didn’t stick together as a pie. I think there might have been too much cabbage. I could also reduce the coconut flour a little perhaps? I’m really not a great cook so it seems like I need to experiment a bit here. What I loved is that it is similar to bubble and squeak. Definitely worth another go 👍Thanks again for sharing Subtle_badger 🌷

Yeah, the first one I made was more bubble and squeak, too. You may notice my version has one more egg than than the version in the video.

I didn't say this, but maybe I should have: with the one in the picture, as I was using the food processor for something else, I used it to mix the flour and egg. I wonder if that made a difference?

If you get it to work better, please share your version!
