Today we lost our beloved cat Millie. Our house is heartbroken. She was the grand old age of 19. On a positive I have managed almost 20,000 steps today.

Sorry to hear about Millie - I know it can be really hard when a pet dies. 19 is a great age though, I bet she had a good life with you.

She was losing a lot of weight towards the end but my god she could still eat. She was a miserable bugger at times but she was ours. Thank you for your kind words.

I am very sorry to hear about Millie. The loss we feel for our beloved pet is very strong ,but often unexpected, so do allow yourselves to grieve.

Well done on those 20000 steps.

It is sad to loose a pet as they are part of the family, 19 is quite an age for a cat and I bet you had some good moments with her.

Hi Bee-bop, we did. She was a grumpy cat but she was also very loving when she wanted to be!

I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost our cat 6 years ago now at the age of 19. She was so young looking/ acting but in the end it was kinder to put her to sleep. I know how hard it is and again, I am so sorry. I bet she had a lovely life with you though. Xx

Hi 2stoneup, thank you for your kind words. It is like losing a family member. I feel more sorry for my wife who had had her since she was a kitten. She will be missed but also remembered fondly.

I still miss Simba. We had her from 6 weeks old. She was the sweetest little thing. If your wife is anything like me, there have been many tears, and there will be lots more. Thinking of you both. Xx

Hi 2stoneup, she has shed a lot of tears and so have I. I didn't think I would miss her as much, but the house seems an emptier place without her. Thank you for your kind words.

Oh my, how sad. There are times when being an animal lover is very painful. Best wishes.

We were heartbroken when we lost our cat at 17 , we went & adopted two kittens within a couple of weeks & they are almost 7 now

Such a good idea and after Bob died in January we tried to do the same thing in February by filling our home and our hearts with new moggies but Covid 19 had just got underway and the vets were all closed except for emergencies. We have to trust that when the right time come another puss, or even two, will come our way, one way or another. So glad you have your two lovely ones now. BB x

Hi Cat33. Thank you so much for your kind words. I feel desperately sad for my wife more than me, who had had her since she was 6 weeks old. She found her and was inconsolable for a while. Still, she is in a better place now and no longer in any pain. My wife has also said she can't handle having another cat...but we will see in the future. Thank you again.

Very sorry to hear about Millie. She did well, and must have had a lovely life with you. We lost our old lady 7 years ago at 20, and still miss her. Thinking of you at a difficult time.

Hi Blackcat66. It is hard. I still miss the dogs I have had and lost in my life and now I am missing my first cat. I was always her favourite apart from my wife. Thank you for your kind words.

Indeed. I think if stubbornness was a prerequisite for life she would have lived until she was 100!

I'm so sorry to hear this, Wordsworth2 . We lost our dear cat Bob almost exactly four months ago. I 'see' him everywhere and it will be a long while before I don't miss him with almost unbearable sadness. My heart goes out to you at this difficult time and hopefully, when we are through this sad mess of a pandemic, another puss-cat in need of a home will become a another source of comfort and joy.

Hi Betty, thank you so much for your kind words. I am also sorry for your loss. I walked in to the room she sleeps this morning with cat food ready to feed her before I remembered that she was no longer there. It is so bare now. I also keep hearing her meow, which was really annoying two days ago but I would give anything to hear again now. I am sure that in time the memories will make me happy rather than sad. Again, thank you for your kind words.

BerlinBettyVisitor in reply to Wordsworth2

I'm so sorry and know only too well what that habit-of-care is like. I used to call 'Good night!' to Bob before I went to sleep because his room was near mine. Four months in and some nights I open my mouth to call and then realise. The habit of love for other humans and for creatures is deeply imbedded in us all.

We all react differently under these difficult circs; I kept all his bedding and his toys for another cat when I can face the idea of getting another mog, but the food - and there was a lot of it - I gave to an animal shelter because I couldn't bear it in the house.

So many people on this site will have lost a dear pet at some point of their lives and will know how you feel and be thinking of you. Let yourself grieve, won't you?

Meanwhile, keep doing the splendid exercise; that's therapeutic as well as keeping you healthy.

love Betty

I took all Simba's renal prescription food, litter trays, etc down to the local RSPCA. And gave her cat tree to my friend who also had a Simba. I needed to get it out of the house. But I still have her bowls and carrier.

BerlinBetty profile image
BerlinBettyVisitor in reply to 2stoneup

I so understand all of this.. We need to do what our hearts tell us we can and can't cope with under these circs. I have both my last two cats' ashes in little boxes in my study, and yes, sometimes I do talk to them. I always thought little containers of ashes were a bit weird but when it came to it I wasn't ready to let them go completely. Grief is a strange world. We cannot know how we operate in it until we find ourselves transported there.

I hope that eventually you find happiness with another puss, as I hope I will.

Hi Craftyperson. Thank you so much for the hug and the kind words. Thankfully we have a lot of good memories to keep us going and a very loving dog to cheer us up. I know what it's like to lose a dog, so I know the pain you must have gone through too. Thank you again.

Bob used to glare at me when I wasn't Flavour of the Month then sit with his back to me for hours at a time until he decided he was speaking to me again. Used to kill me, that. Animals are such characters.
