Peri menopausal Lockdown weight gain

Hi all,

I have noticed since 'Lockdown' that my weight gain has become noticeable.

How have I managed to put on a stone in 4 weeks!!! I presume it's the wfh snacking but I have reached an age where I could be entering the menopause. So the combination has left me extremely down.

Has anyone got any tips on how to get started and how to maintain.

To top it all I haven't got any working scales but I am presuming that I am around 10 stone. I would like to lose a stone in 3-4 months. Does anyone think this is doable.

You are not alone I’m finding the lockdown a struggle. Snacking can be a real issue. I’ve found eating proper meals, of an adequate amount and a good balance of fat, proteins and vegetables really helps. Have a look at this healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Hi - it’s so easy to nibble when we’re WFH, we all know this. I’ve been getting up and doing some exercise indoors or out on the patio for 30 mins...running on the spot, squats, weights. Three mornings a week I have also been doing a 20 mins run (not particularly fast). I have a shower and then make sure I have a lovely breakfast to look forward to. For example, yoghurt with fruit and then poached eggs with a slice of bacon. You can do this. It’s getting into a mindset so that you cut out snacking. I also make sure I make lemon water and have it in the fridge to drink so that I’m not pulling out the cupboards looking for things to eat. You can do this...give it a go :)

Thanks Pudster. I really need to try. Otherwise I will be another stone heavier as I am shocked by how quickly it has happened.

Hi Allybird,

Choose a plan and stick with it. I am on the slimming world plan and snacks are allowed in that. Also if you are calorie counting, snacks are not off limit. On other plans, they are. You choose what fits you.

Swap out your favourites for things that help weight loss. Up veg and fruit and lower things that are less nutritious, like crisps etc

You can do this! Checkout the daily diary, it is really useful to put a plan in place as I feel I can't come too far off track that way.

Thanks for the good pointers. I have found that I most probably reduced my fruit intake and I have swapped it for biscuits, which is obviously not good.

Hi Allybird,

You can swap unhealthy items for more nutritious alternatives. I didn't used to eat so much fruit and am glad that I now have a more nutritious diet. One of my favourite swaps is plain soya yogurt, fruit and a bit cacoa. Better that a biscuit to me ☺

Very doable. I have lost nearly 2 stone in a similar time period, using LCHF and intermittent fasting.

Snacking is very bad for you. Not just the calories but when you eat your insulin rises, which is a fat storage hormone that stops fat burning - so every time you snack, your fat burning stops.

Thanks subtle badger. You are right about the insulin cycle, as a scientist I am pretty ashamed I did not know this already but I think since hitting mid 40s I have noticed how hard it is to lose weight and how easy it is to gain. I am hoping to gain some willpower from somewhere. 😂

It’s absolutely so doable you wouldn’t believe it, even when you’re not as physically active as pre lockdown. Eat proper meals low on carbs especially sugar, using healthy fats to satisfy your hunger (bread and potatoes are not what “fill you up” till the next meal). If you absolutely have to eat between meals (through hunger, not boredom) then have cubes of cheese, pecan nuts, boiled eggs handy in the fridge so you don’t reach for crisps or biscuits.

Thanks pandqs. I will try to keep this in mind when I go near the biscuit cupboards. I never knew how damaging snacking was, so my eyes are definitely open now. If I could lose the first half stone then I am sure I will start to feel myself again and less depressed.
