Hello everyone,

I’m new to this site. Have previously tried Other diets.. now looking at a lifestyle change. Thinking as I’m a student nurse what better way to start this than through the NHS guide!! Worth a try!!

Anyway... any hints & tips will be greatly appreciated.. best of luck to you all 💪🏼🌸

Hello and welcome, StudentNurse19 :)

There's a lot of information and support around the forum so I hope you'll get involved, keep and open mind and make the most of it.

Here are a few things to read that might challenge your ideas about a "healthy" diet - they certainly did for me. I'm sure, with your background knowledge of anatomy and physiology, you'll find them interesting.

A blog from a GP fatismyfriend.co.uk/

'The truth about fat and sugar' from a cardiologist doctoraseem.com/the-truth-a...

Advice from the National Obesity Forum/Public Health Collaboration phcuk.org/wp-content/upload...

I'll be interested in what you think.

A good starting point with this forum is to join a weekly weigh in on the day of your choice, and use the Daily Diary to share your meal plans and see what others are planning. You'll find them, our Welcome Newbies message, and all our other activities in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... Do some exploring and then join in as much as you can.

PS The HU app doesn't give full access to the site so, if you're using it, ditch it and find the website via your browser

Using the NHS with good effect, steady weight loss since end of December. My weigh day is tomorrow - a bit apprehensive as I have well and truly blasted through my calorie allowance, but I know that there will be lots of support tomorrow no matter what the weight is, which will inspire me to carry on next week. The knowledge you will gain about food will help you in your career as a nurse.

Have you got a personalised calorie range from the NHS BMI calculator? You may be aiming for too little. And you'll get some great ideas for using your calorie allowance well on the Daily Diary.

Hope to see you back on the Sunday weigh-in team tomorrow. It's usually chattier in the morning so get in as soon as you can :)

My blow out has been meals out which I couldn't work around that well and a reduction in normal exercise routine. The NHS BMI calculator says 1700. I am usually between 1500 and 1700 which has given me an average loss of 775g over the last 7 weeks. I want to eat the foods I enjoy , but less and it seems to be erring towards the low carbohydrate increased fat. Just enjoyed a Tom Kerridge mushroom stuffed with ricotta and spinach for lunch.

I do look at the daily diaries for ideas, but we are a household who have never planned a whole day's meals. we shop frequently and a 'cheapy' may change the meal plan.Saying that we are very much in a LCHF mindset.

Will try and post early as you suggest.

Sounds good, making changes as you go :)

Is 1700 the top or the bottom of your range? It really isn't a good idea to go below the range suggested. It won't pay off for you in the long term

I'm not sure. So I will check.

That’s great to hear, glad it’s working out well for you! Hopefully I’ll have similar results, all the best for tomorrow’s weigh in! I want to be a good advocate for health care, so fingers crossed for success!!

Hi StudentNurse19 , welcome.

Have you heard of Dr Jason Fung and Dr. David Unwin?

What do they teach you about Diabetes, (Intermittent) Fasting and Low-Carb, High-Fat (LCHF) diets?

If you "slim smart" weight loss is not so hard! It is not all about motivation and masochism.

Some of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Snacking All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:

Newbies IF FAQ:

Thank you for that, I will take a look. I’ve had lots of recommendations for fasting, including the 5:2 diet! Not something I’ve tried.

Hello and welcome Studentnurse. I only joined a week ago and I find it so helpful reading about the experiences and ups and downs of others, many I can relate to. My friends and family wouldnt want to talk about food, calories, weightloss etc but here are lots of helpful folk who are inspirational and help to motivate me. Good luck !
