Given up a bit...

3 months ago I had a hip revision to replace the lose hip replacement i used to have, recovery went well. I was trying to be sensible with what I was eating as I was lying down a lot and not able to exercise. Christmas came and this went out of the window i ate so much! Since then I have not really started being sensible again.

I have been on FODMAP for 3 years, as my recovery from my operation was going well I decided to try some reintroduction. To my amazement I have been fine apart from some gas! so I can now eat wheat/Gluten, garlic and chickpeas! This is great but also not so great. All of the cakes and biscuits people brought into work I could never eat before but now I can and I seem to have no self control I just eat and eat and eat. It is like I want to make up for the 3 years of lost time which I know sounds silly.

I have lost motivation and control my weight it back up and i just dont seem to care..

I was so close to getting my BMI in the healthy range and now that's far away again.

I just need a bit of help/guidance. I feel silly like i should know eating 3 croissants isn't a good idea but i did it anyway and its not just a one off. I am not telling my family what I am eating extra at work. I am embarrassed. My partner put weight on over Christmas (he was still in a healthy BMI range) and has lost it already as he has had no alcohol or treats since new years. I just don't know how he has that self control or motivation.

I know this is super long but just sort of needed to get it out.

Welcome back, Coffee_cake :)

Maybe the best thing for you to do, is to regard yourself as still being intolerant to wheat/gluten, as it sounds to me as if you still are. Processed carbs upset your hormones and switch off your stop button, making it impossible to eat just one croissant, without finishing the packet and moving onto the cake, biscuits and sweeties after. A low carb diet would sort that out for you, have a look at these healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... phcuk.org/wp-content/upload... dietdoctor.com/low-carb and healthunlocked.com/lchf-diet

As a reminder, all of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and I hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.

We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.

Wishing you all the best for 2020 :)

Thanks for this. I do need to get back to doing one of the day weigh ins as i found them really helpful and supportive.

I think i am worried about doing the low carb diet is it means cutting out fruit and I have found fruit has help me 'regular' which due to medication i used to struggle with.

You can still eat tons of veg, fat, linseed, psyllium husk, nuts and berries, which all help keep you regular.

I had problems with being 'regular' when I first started lchf, but my body has adjusted now. I think it took a couple of weeks or so? Sometimes for a 'pudding' I have a few berries (I keep frozen ones, Iceland do 'imperfect' ones, which works out cheap) and some Greek yoghurt and extra thick cream. Also if I make 90 second bread I add pysillium husk. And also I eat loads of veg, even with my breakfast, far more than ever before. All is fine now, even the wind problem I had back in the carb days (I couldn't move without farting! Literally! 🤣) has gone! I am now far more lady like! 🤣🤣

First of all well done for coming online and sharing your struggles with us! I know it can be hard to admit that we are struggling but it's the first step in figuring out how to overcome some of the obstacles.

I also think it's good news that the operation went well and also that you are able to reintroduce foods to your diet that you had previously needed to restrict. These are things worth celebrating!

Having identified some positives and celebrated them it is good to think about what might help to make you feel more in control of your weight loss/health journey again. Personally I struggle a lot with the needing to eat the whole packet rather than just having 1 kind of thing. What has worked for me is switching my daily habits to LCHF (low carb high fat). When I eat things with carbs I tend to desire food ALL DAY LONG. It doesn't stop it doesn't go away and it's all I can think about and it drives me up the wall until I finally crumble and eat a whole packet of cakes/biscuits/doughnuts/pasta/bread whatever I can get my hands on. And then I feel terrible. (and then I might eat some more to cheer myself up. Harm has already been done anyways so why not right?)

By switching to LCHF on a daily basis I don't get those crazy thoughts to begin with which is really liberating. However, what is also nice is that, knowing that I am not diabetic and have no medical need to control carbs (or in your case, knowing you aren't intolerant and have no medical need to restrict wheat/gluten) I CAN indulge for a special occasion and I do. When I'm visiting family and they dish up the most amazing fresh baked loaf of home made bread, I'll have a slice or two. Because I know I can and because I know I'll enjoy it. I'm not going to lie I have no perfect self control and often a one off special occasion leads to a 3-5 days of bad eating until I manage to get things back under control. But, since I really don't enjoy the feeling of being a slave to my food thoughts and cravings that normally provides me with the motivation to get back to it. Judging by your post you are ready to make a switch back to healthier eating again as well. We've all got your back here so sending you positive vibes.

If you feel like you're still struggling to 'stick with it' maybe try identifying what your main triggers/weak moments are and see if you can plan around them? It might feel like a restriction at first but when you get back in the swing of your healthy habits you won't need to plan and strategise as much anymore so it's just temporary and the reward is feeling better about yourself and in yourself and with yourself ^_^ You can do this!

p.s. I'd say try to avoid any comparison with your husband. Men's hormones are different from women's hormones and don't underestimate the effect that has on our food choices! So I think to compare is being unfair on yourself <3 Don't forget to celebrate your successes
