Vegetarian struggling to lose weight

I have been a vegetarian for almost a year. For the last five months I have been ill, get better then bang back ill again. I am also struggling to lose weight. I eat healthy and following a plan at the moment, but, the weight loss is painfully slow. I do drink milk (anybody have suggestions for alternative milk in tea). I would like to swap, also eat a little cheese. I also take a multivitamin tablet.

Is it my age? I am almost 70.

Any advice would be welcome.

Hello, lizzy65, and welcome back :)

These are the links you were given when you were last here: they are particularly relevant, given your age and your history as a dieter. You may need to question whether what, and how, you are eating is healthy if it's not bringing you weight down to a healthy level.

Anyway, here's the information that has helped so many of us

I have tagged you in the Newbie Welcome post so pop over there to remind yourself how the forum works and how to find your way around. You'll find a list of activities on our chat thread healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... I recommend joining a weekly weigh in and using the Daily Diary. I don't think you joined them previously so they could make all the difference.

Wishing you every success :)

Thank you for the advice. I am so wrapped up in 'dieting', doing it all my life, I have been afraid to start doing anything else. I am currently doing Slimming World, I don't feel as though it suits me, being vegetarian. I will read the links you have sent me and try and sort my head out. Being ill for so long has not helped me. Although only minor things, it has knocked me back, I feel fed up of being ill.

Thank you, once again.

You're very welcome :)

The links I've given you will suggest a different approach from Slimming World and may be worth trying as SW isn't suiting you. Do have a look at the Daily Diary. There are vegetarians there and people with a variety of plans :)

Hallo Lizzy, I too went vegetarian recently, my youngest daughter has been vegetarian since she was 4 so I am used to cooking vegetarian meals. I use oatly milk instead of dairy most of the time, but I haven’t lost weight yet...

What eating plan are you following, ES? You might like to read the information I've given above.

Have you joined a weekly weigh in yet, or tried the Daily Diary? You'll get great support and ideas there, and your support will be welcome, too :)

Thank you, I will give it a go. I have just moved house, it took over 6 months to refurbish, and due to stress eaten far to much additional rubbish, like biscuits and chocolate, on top of what is a sensible diet and, I think, enough exercise ( daily dog walk and aquarobics 3x a week) . I know I just need to cut out the rubbish and stop overeating! Registering with a new GP and actually weighing myself has woken me up.

A fresh start for you, then :)

It's easier to cut out rubbish when you are really enjoying your food. Real food is more filling so you don't resort to rubbish because you're hungry and you retrain your taste buds, if that makes sense.

I have to say I thought I knew what a healthy diet was when I came here but reading and asking questions has turned a lot of my thinking on its head, particularly about fats, which we've been wrongly frightened off for decades :)

Thanks, you are quite right about thinking a diet is healthy when it isn’t. I think when I’m eating properly I don’t grab a biscuit! Could you send me the links you sent to Lizzy 65 please? Maybe I am not as healthy as I thought I was.
