Pushing 40 4 stone heavier

I’m coming up to my 40th in a few months time and piled on the weight since I got married 13 years ago. Today is my first day I’m trying to shift some of this excess weight. I’ve noticed more so over the last year with achy knees and bad back so I’m going to give this a right go. I’ve joined the local gym for some motivation and this forum. I’ve got a family holiday coming up in April 2020 to Florida and hoping to shift 2-3 stone. Let’s do this 👊🏻💪🏻

Good for you! The kind of gym available is very important, isn't it? I used to go to a gym which was full of stern-faced sweaty men and women pumping their egos as well as iron, and when you're a bit soft and wobbly and everything is moving in time to the music as you jiggle up and down it's not a Good-look or a Good-feel, is it?! Then I found a little gym round the corner which was attached to a holiday park, and which accepted local residents for a very reasonable price. There was still the Unsmiling Sweater Brigade in the evening, but if I went during the day, most people looked like me, and would exchange a brotherly or sisterly grin as we got on with it, as best we could, in the silent battle for better shape and health.

Now I live abroad and the local gyms look a Wee Bit Eager, I have saved up my pennies (or cents) and bought a couple of medium grade machines from a well-known sports chain: a static bike and an elliptical trainer. We have them in the garage and it's absolutely marvellous exercising when I want, dressed how I want, and no-one's watching me but the cat!

Of course some people feel motivated by the gym atmosphere, so whatever works for you, go for it! And all good luck! Remember to match your effort by dropping something fatty or sugary from your diet because however hard you exercise, the diet is the major factor, as I'm sure you know.

Hi, Gym_shy_guy , Welcome

I was pushing 70 whe I wanted to lose 4 Stone.

Many of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Eating All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:

(Intermittent) Fasting is good for pain and inflammation:
