Swollen ankles

Hey all! My ankles have been slightly swollen for the past few days and a bit tender to the touch. Any ideas on what this could be?

Thanks!

Could be the heat SaraMarie however myself and no one here is qualified to give you any specific advice. My suggestion would be that if it's causing you a problem or if it persists, is that you see your doctor.

How are things going generally?

Thank you! Generally, I’d say pretty well. It seems to have gone down a bit, so that’s good. I’m on this weight loss journey and just want to keep going till I see those results. It’s been tough but I won’t quit.

How about you?

Glad to hear that things are positive for you.

Thanks for asking and things are going a lot better since I came back here and immersed myself in the forum. It's what worked for me last time... although this time I've dropped cal counting and have found that lchf is allowing me to eat tasty food without having to fight all the cravings that dogged me previously.

Good for you and your fighting spirit but if you ever feel that you need a bit of a gee-up, maybe think about using the weigh-in or daily diary here... or just chat about your day in What's Happening.

Keep an eye on those ankles. It sounds like they're improving but don't leave it too long if they don't :)

Thanks so much, I appreciate it :) A diary is a good idea! I do have a weigh-in app, which has been working pretty well thankfully!! As for the ankles, they’re looking a lot less swollen. Still a bit tender but definitely better :)

The good thing about the Daily Diary is that you post your menu for the coming day. The benefits are that it helps you stick to it because it's already organised and if you life gets in the way, it's easier to make informed changes.

Additionally, you find great ideas from what others are eating. I don't think a week goes by without me trying at least one new thing. Other benefits include giving and receiving constructive (pleasant) feedback to and from each other plus of course you get to know other people who'll support you on those days when you might just want to say 'bugger it all' :O :)

And by the looks of everything I just wrote, I get a 10% commission for everyone that uses it ;)

It’s definitely something to consider!

It could be fluid retention you need to see your doctor. It may be nothing serious or it could be serious it needs to be investigated.

Agreed. I don't want to worry you but it could be a symptom of artery calcification which could lead to heart disease. Having said that if it's only been the last three days then this is unlikely. NB. I'm not a doctor! Please go and get it checked out.

I appreciate the response! It didn’t worry me! Better to be honest!

Thank you! If nothing changes, I’ll book an appointment

heat. Mine are up a bit too. It's to do with the lymphatic system and there are exercises on line that basically mean rubbing the heel of one foot against the front of the ankle.

I had a feeling. Weather here has been crazy, especially the heat, at night and during the day. I’ll give these exercises a go, thanks so much!

It is peripheral oedema.

I had it when I started walking again after being disabled for five years.

The heat would not help, but it could be caused by too little exercise - or an increase in exercise.

If your ankles are a "matched pair" it is probably not a vascular or lymphatic problem.

Putting your feet up might help - but resting your legs on anything might restrict the flow of blood and lymph.

Lymphatic massage is a bit specialist - but a massage might help... and you can massage yourself - stroking towards the heart. If your ankles are too painful to massage, massage the rest of your leg.

If it does not improve when it gets cooler - see your doctor.

This is definitely worth a try. I have to for sure workout more, too. This kind of massage seems like a good start. Thank you!

I have had rings of swollen ankles caused by tight sock elastic - I have even taken scissors to one or two pairs.

I figured it had to have been the heat. Weather in NJ has been so on and off. Thankfully, today they’re looking more back to normal🙌🏼
