So I've cancelled my ww subscriptions as Its just not working for me.I think it's a case of been doing it that long I'm just bored and still overweight 25 years on.I should have shares in the company, I've been going on and off since my mid 20s.So I'm 50 next year and wanting to be 50 and fabulous.Im calorie counting and I've smashed today with 75 cals left over..I'm also not hungry.

Looking to lose 3 stone...So let's see how this one goes..

Thankyou for this..I am going to investigate this further because it describes my struggles perfectly.I lost weight easier when younger and now it is such hard work, no matter how hard I work. The sugar cravings I have I struggle with, then I'm back to square one..I think for me it's a case of just cutting everything out for a while, damage limitation..

I would advise against cutting back too drastically. As that first post explains, it's over-restriction that has tended to mess up our metabolisms.

If you think in terms of real food, home prepared, avoiding processed (and that included anything marked low fat or diet or light/lite - all heavily processed), reduce the carbohydrates that cause the biggest insulin spikes and don't be afraid of healthy fats, you should be on the right track.

There are plenty of food ideas here including Lytham's Larder and The Cost of Healthy Eating that you will find in Pinned Posts (directions in the welcome link I have given you)

PS why not put your WW subs aside in a piggy bank to buy new clothes as you lose weight, or some other non-food treat :)

Good luck on your journey I've lost six stone since last November mainly walking every where from virtually nothing to 10,000 steps per day. Last week started going to gym to try and get rid of my flabby bits.

The help from people on here as been amazing take your time you will have bad days stay positive you can do this good luck and take care. Paul

My advise would be to be stop thinking you’re on a ‘diet’, the minute we put that thought in our head we begin obsessing about food. Much better to think you’re switching to a healthy lifestyle instead. What’s worked for me is cutting out all sugar and artificial sweeteners (which I’ve read stimulate your appetite), it’ll take about six weeks to get used to it but once you do, you won’t miss it. The other good thing about ditching sugar, sweeteners and anything that says low fat or diet is that you will lose those overwhelming cravings. I’d always suffered with that and almost felt possessed by the sugar demon but since cutting it all out I don’t have cravings, I don’t feel the need to snack, I’m not mindlessly buying chocolate and scoffing the lot. I’ve always eaten fairly healthy but portions were way too big so now I’ve reduced the amount that I eat (I use a smaller dinner plate) but because I’m eating the right foods, fresh, non processed, made from scratch, lots of veg, limited fruit, limited carbs, salad, meat and fish with good flavours added, I never feel hungry and I’m not raiding the cupboard at 9pm. When I say limited carbs I mean once upon a time I would have had four heaped tablespoons of mashed potato plus the scrapping from the pan whereas now I’ll have a dessert spoon of mash, so I still enjoy it occasionally I’m just not eating enough for five. I’ve lost two stone so far and feel good. If you can incorporate some exercise too, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t lose weight and keep it off. The old adage of eat less move more is mostly definitely true. Don’t give up on it, just try a different mind set and approach. One thing that impacted on me was in your 40’s being over weight means you can’t buy that dress you want or it looks awful on you which is a pain but in your 50’s it’s not about how you look any more, being over weight means achy joints, risk of diabetes, heart problems, cancer etc etc. Losing weight as you get older is all about improving your health and staying healthy for longer, which is a big incentiviser. Keep going, you can do it. If you’re able think about the NHS Couch to 5K challenge, you will surprise yourself with how much you can achieve. Good luck xx

Hi Miss-Cat,

I came here after years of trying the usual WW, SW, Cambridge, cabbage soup, generally all low fat calorie or sin counting stuff. Someone here put me on to Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) as an alternative and I’m loving it as it got rid of hunger pangs and cravings and food tastes gorgeous again. There’s an LCHF forum here and I can also recommend a series of videos on YouTube called The Skinny on Obesity which show why sugar and other carbs are what we should be avoiding.

I have always thought ww like to get results but obviously don't want to put themselves out of business by being too good. Slimming is a huge money making business taking advantage of people who find it hard to keep the weight off!

That is exactly me! I did Ww on and off for at least 20 years... (got to gold twice etc etc) never again. The I information that Bridge Girl has sent you could be a total game changer for you 🤞. I do LCHF and try to eat in a 12 hour window. I sometimes count calories too if I think things are slowing down but am really careful not to eat too little. It’s so liberating as I don’t have cravings, don’t feel hungry and generally find it easy.

In totally agree also with what Scouse55mouse said too. I don’t feel like I’m on a diet. This is a permanent lifestyle change and it feels so different to when I was doing Ww. I did LCHF for the first time two years ago and lost 3 st, but put it back on because I didn’t really understand the brain chemistry behind it all. I Read ‘Bright Line Eating’ which has really helped me understand why I have yoyoed for the last 25 years and am really confident that I’m doing it for the last time this time. (I couldn’t follow the plan in that book - it’s too strict for me, but I liked the science and it influences the way I eat now.)

I was 17 st when I started, and want to be securely in my healthy BMI and in permanent long term new habits and routines by the time I’m 50 - hopefully before as am nearly 47 now.

People on here are really inspiring as there are lots maintaining big losses!

I've done WW, Slimming World, Tesco and Sainsbury's diets over the years! Have had a couple of 'big' successes but line you they just don't work for me any more. I started this plan two and a half weeks ago and have lost 5lbs. There's lots to keep you motivated if you do everything they offer. Good luck.

Like you I was onWW when I was a bit younger, after having each of my children, and I was successful at losing all my baby weight. But since turning 50, my weight has gone up considerably and after a couple of months WW was not doing it for me at all so I stopped my subscription rather than waste more money and time.

I've been on here since April, and what's really worked for me has been Low Carb High Fat. I don't feel hungry or have the same sugar cravings, and I'm really enjoying my food. Have lost a stone on it with no effort at all - I don't see it as a diet, just a better way of eating.

So now, I'm not wasting money on special foods, not snacking, and my other half jokingly complained last night that my bum had got smaller (!) Now as I know full well I've got an a**e the size of Canada, that is music to my ears.

So do at least have a read about LCHF and consider it, because it is working for me in an enjoyable way. And do stick around and participate in the forum. The weekly weigh-ins are great, very supportive. Good luck!

Sounds like me and I’m older. Carrying on counting and mindful of what I eat, weighing food and tracking on MFP even if over. Some excellent days and some naughty days. Weighing when I actually remember (good days). Am losing slowly.....feeling better and not wasting my money....plus a false sense of allowance of free and 0 points and speed food. i.e. all food inc good healthy stuff has calories. I also have a day occasionally of very low carbs. Good luck....it’s a daily struggle and harder as you get older......PS I try and get out walking or on treadmill as much as Possible. 😇🐷🥰

I think cancelling your WW is. Great move. I did the same a couple of years ago having got to gold in 2008 and then becoming a perpetual yo yo dieter with smaller losses and greater gains. In my view It’s not healthy because they are a business and have a vested interest in you failing and buying more products, for example there’s no encouragement to kick a chocolate habit. Just plenty of ways to fuel it. The nhs/ nutracheck way is the best app I have ever found. Calories are real points/syns etc are not real. I keep saying to myself calories are real. And calories have consequences. I have achieved 1 stone loss since 01/06/2019 by facing this and stopping feeding a sweet tooth and a view that I deserved chocolate bars and alcohol and diligently using the app and counting steps and ironing / housework etc. You don’t need to feed a huge business empire to lose weight. I could go on.. my hairdressers showed me a box of powders and bars for her diet plan. She has lost loads of weight but They looked so unhealthy and first day off she binged on ice cream fish and chips pizza ... no new habits learned. Eating fresh food and counting calories is the way!

I’m doing slimming World with my daughters think it helps to have someone else doing it as well

I’m also cutting out processed foods and cutting down in sugars

Your post so resonates with what I've been saying about the basic ineffectuality of slimming companies. They are there to make money, so they want just enough success to look good commercially (a few well publicised star followers is all they need...) but all slimming companies rely on a half-desperate company of Hopeful Apostles to the Cause who never actually quite make it, but keep beggaring on, clinging to hope against hope.

Anyone see a likeness between that and gambling firms? Same principle. Based on hope but actually relying on a large number who fail in their aims but continue to hope that fortunes will change for them.

So Good for You for breaking away. I promise you if you use this forum to help and inspire you, you'll make more progress of the sustainable sort than you've made before, and to a degree which will amaze and delight you.

And of course, no-one's trying to make any money out of you in the process. All you're going to have taken away from you here on HU, is self-doubt .
