All geared up for my health kick

I stepped on the scales and have lost 0.5kg already whoop whoop! Went out shopping today and bought lots of healthy food. I was checking labels and really thinking about everything i was putting into the trolley. My mum treated me to a fitness tracker so now i can track my progress even closer. There was an event on in town and there was a stall about health and well being. I have signed up to be a health champion to go on a course and learn about healthy eating where i will gain a qualification in health. Really looking forward to it. I sorted through all my food cupboards and cleared out most of the junk food and gave it to my dad. Out with the old in with the new. My brain has finally calmed down after working non stop the last few days due to me not feeling tired and being more active. I've had a great day

All sounds good Kylie.

The course sounds like it could be interesting. You could do some revision beforehand to make it easier to understand the course...

That's a great link that Tiggerr has given you and may give you a new slant on healthy eating - especially about the value of healthy fats and the problem with low fat and fat free products :)

It sounds like you have really grasped this and are excited and enjoying your journey!

Did you pick up anything nice for those cupboards??

Yes i bought apples, pears, bananas, lettuce, tomatoes, cornflakes, spinach, cucumber, beetroot, wheat crackers, chicken, seafood sticks, sweetcorn, orange squash, eggs, ham, low fat coleslaw, skimmed milk to try, fat free yoghurt, bagels (which i have never had before), Balsamic dressing and mash powder. The only things i left in the cupboards was 2 multipacks of crisps 1 which is quavers which are low in calories, 2 bags of toffee popcorn but i will only eat small portions at a time instead of the whole bag in one go, and some chocolate rolo mooses.

I don't want to pop your bubble, Kylie89, but some of your choices aren't as healthy as you may think. My comments aren't intended as criticism, but as useful advice for long term success.

Whatever way of eating that people choose, all will agree that fresh, natural products are what should be aimed for and processed foods should be avoided. For any food item to end up as low fat/skimmed/diet/light, it has to go through a lot of processing. The fat is reduced, but other stuff is added, like sugar/sweeteners and chemicals, to make it palatable.

Thank you. I am new to this and i am currently drinking semi skimmed milk but my taste buds are weaker now so i can stand weaker drinks. So i just bought 1 pint of skimmed to see if i like it. I only have 1 cup of tea in the morning because i have IBS and i used to drink 1-2 glasses of milk most evenings but now i am drinking a lot more water. I had to have a detox because I had a colonoscopy on Wednesday so i am now retraining my tastebuds and not craving sugar and salt now. I will try alternative milk at the moment i am just adjusting to and learning about new changes. I have been reading books on healthy eating and it's been the first time i have been reading and writing with complete focus for a long time.

Full fat milk is best, as is full fat yoghurt and cheese. Skimmed and semi-skimmed have a higher level of milk sugars.

You would probably find your IBS would respond well to a low carb diet. dietdoctor.com/low-carb/ben...

There are some great choices there and a lot of variety, well done on making that big change and getting healthier foods into those cupboards!

Moreless has given great advice re processed foods and trying to avoid low fat etc

I was a sucker for this....always bought the 50% fat cheese, low fat yogurts and cheese spreads to start but I soon learned that the fuller fat versions were better - I just had to either have a little less or have the same amount and work the calories into my calorie count for the day.

I still drink semi skimmed milk - just because it's the one I prefer.

The big one for me at the start was dairylea triangles. I thought I was being good having them as a snack as it's cheese and low calories ... Then someone said to me read the label on them ... Highly processed and not good, although low calorie!

Thats how we learn though and the beauty of being involved on here, you do learn quite a lot! :)

Well done on making the first steps though!

Thanks for explaining to me. Now i understand a bit better. I am greatful for all the information but i was finding it a bit much to process as my brain is only just feeling normal. My brain has had a good workout this week as i haven't been so energized in a long time. I can now focus and concentrate on one thing at a time. So is skimmed milk processed? I am just learning all this is new to me but I'm enjoying it.

in reply to Kylie89

I don't know exactly but they take the fat out of whole milk to make skimmed milk and half of it out to make semi skimmed milk. So it does go through a process and isn't a natural product in that way.

I just did a quick google and found this paragraph re skimmed milk ...

Skimmed milk is lower in fat and calories than whole milk, and marginally higher in calcium, but some experts suggest that the saturated fat in dairy may not be a problem in terms of heart health. In fact, by drinking skimmed we may be missing out on fat-soluble nutrients like vitamins A and E.

That may help :)
