The best diet is????

Hey how's it going. Just a quick post as I am off to the golf course and then the gym. So what in my opinion is the best diet? Is it the 5:2 is it slimming world? How about weight watchers? How about low carb high protein, or low protein high carb or good old calorie counting?

The best diet system is....... The one you are going to stick with!! If you cannot commit 100% to the regime then it won't work. All diets are basically the same they all reduce down your calories. But it has to fit in with your lifestyle. If you are shoehorning it into your life it won't work.

But if you are very overweight or obese the first thing you have to realise is you have to admit to yourself you have a unhealthy relationship with food and take steps to get a healthy relationship with food. Choose a lifestyle change that you can continue after you reach your goal weight, remember a very high proportion of Dieter's end up gaining all the weight back because they did not modify their lifestyle for the end of the journey.

I went from 18 stone down to 12 five years ago and I have kept that weight off and I am slowly increasing my muscle mass in the gym and keeping my fat down by controlling my food intake.

One last thing, it's nearly the weekend, let's steel ourselves to stay in the zone!!

Hi, PTKeith

"All diets are basically the same they all reduce down your calories."

Weight-Loss diets also have to provide all the essential nutrients: protein, minerals, vitamins etc. ...and provide energy in the right balance of fat, carbohydrate, etc.

"The best diet system is....... The one you are going to stick with"

This is a good theory - and most of us have to transition into a weight-loss strategy:

Calorie-restricted diets suppress the metabolism, and Intermittent Fasting (IF) stimulates it... and this is one of the reasons that the simple arithmetic of calories eaten less calories burnt does not work very well.

You can start by setting a time in the evening after which you do not eat, and then gradually transition into Intermittent Fasting 16:8 or 20:4. This can take weeks - as your body gets into "fat burning mode".

You can start by cutting out Grains, Potatoes, and Sugar, and then transition into Low-Carbohydrate High-Fat (LCHF) or Keto.

I think that most members who do Intermittent Fasting (or Keto) and eat the Low-Carbohydrate, High-Fat diet find that they can lose weight without counting anything... and this makes transitioning into maintenance so much easier. See:

When I read the post title I just thought "that question is not right, there is no answer for everyone!", I'm glad I read the whole post! I agree with what you say, I'm in the middle of my journey trying to reach a healthy weight from a BMI of 52, and the most important change has been the mindset, more than the diet itself (actually I don't think I'm following a diet, I'm changing my lifestyle!)
