Cholesterol

I'm currently trying to lose weight and my GP has told me my cholesterol is slightly raised. I don't know the exact numbers.

All the conventional wisdom is that we should eat low fat foods to lower it but they are often processed and/or full of sugar.

I guess my question is, has anyone here actually lowered their cholesterol through a low fat diet or other means? I'm considering two different approaches, with the main difference one being low carb and high natural fats and the other being a standard low fat and normal/high carb approach.

The rest of the stuff would be the same between the two - healthy protein, plenty of fruit and veg, little or no sugar and little or no processed foods.

We each have to decide for ourselves what is best for us, but I dislike many low fat foods but by losing weight and eating properly (ie all things in moderation, including butter, cheese and cream) my cholesterol ratio (the important figure) is improved.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realise 75% of the cholesterol in your body is made by the body and doesn't come from food and that carbs become cholesterol faster than cholesterol does that you eat.
