Breastfeeding and the diet

Hello I've just downloaded week one, looking forward to the challenge! I had my baby 15 weeks ago and have at least 5 stone to lose due to excess fluid retention and pregnancy weight. Question: is the calorie intake same if breastfeeding?

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome, Sophsloth :)

The NHS 12 week plan is not suitable for someone that's breastfeeding, you would be better speaking to your midwife/health visitor/GP and getting specific advice.

You shouldn't be eating anything low fat/light/lite/fat free and your calorie allowance will be higher.

It would be better to eat fresh, unprocessed foods and limit processed/junk foods.

Follow this link to our chat thread and a list of all the activities we run. We've found active participation to be key to success, especially with our weigh-ins and Daily Diary

Hello and welcome Sophsloth 😊 Congratulations on your new arrival, these are just the best days ❤️

I agree with Moreless, now isn't the time to be dieting, but eating healthily, watching portion size and reducing snacking are all good suggestions. But please be kind to yourself, I can take up to 12 months for our amazing bodies to recover from pregnancy and birth 😊

Best wishes

dieting isnt a good idea while breast feeding you need a lot more calories to produce milk, speak to your health visitor or dr for advice but for now just eat healthy, make food from scratch and eat thinks like porridge for breakfast that keep you going for longer.

Hi! I am also breastfeeding at night (2 year old toddler) and what I will say is that it's a good idea to plan and batch cook healthy meals so you have something to hand ^.^ Good luck momma and well done!

Congratulations on your baby. I agree with the advice above. Don't try and diet yet. Maybe replace snacks with healthy options and watch portion sizes.. My baby turns 1 on Friday and i only started to diet when she was 8/9 months and i have stuck to it. I dont think i was emotionally ready until that point. Good luck xx

I'd recommend contacting a qualified breastfeeding counsellor - any of La Leche League, Association of Breastfeeding Mothers, Breastfeeding Network or Nct. They are the people with the knowledge and expertise to give you up to date information and individualised support for your situation and your goals. There are many different ways to contact them these days, just choose the way that suits you best.
