How to motivate ????

Hi. I want and need to lose weight. I work full time in an office. I have 2 teenage daughter's and my dad whose almost 90 and suffering with dementia living with me. My knees really hurt at mo, I'd love to go swimming or even bit walking but I don't get regular time to do snything ..i don't know how to motivate myself to do anything so there is no point in trying to lose weight whilst I feel this bad..any suggestions?

I'm thinking you might want to take it easy on yourself. Not so sure about adding more demands in your life. Take the time you can for you however you're in a place right now that might not work for you on a personal level. This too shall pass.....

It depends what you want in the first place I think. Ask yourself where you would like to be in 6 months, 2 stone lighter? Able to run 5k? Able to walk 5k? What about just small milestones say losing 7lbs in 7-10 weeks you could join the Easter challenge. The point is do something and help to set yourself up to win and be able to say - I’ve done it! Cos the then you can set another target. 9 years ago I lost 5 stone with no exercise, I’m not advocating don’t do do any when you can but just that you can lose some weight without it, that’s why I say what do you want to do. If you knees hurt don’t exercise just yet but think about what you’re eating. I did put my 5 st back on by the way and I’ve lost a stone of that since Christmas. For me it’s more important to lose weight just now and when I don’t feel so big I might have a go at the treadmill again. Just now though my knees would struggle (and I haaaattte it!)

You must want to do something as you are posting on this forum. Figure out what it is and why you want it then you can plan the way forward. There are loads of people on here who have success in a bit of weight loss or introducing exercise who can help you, everyone is different and the same thing doesn’t work for everyone.

Give yourself a chance.... then another and another. They all add up.

Hi and welcome, Suze50 :)

Try not to overwhelm yourself with all the things you want to do, just concentrate on the things you can do.

Start with what you're eating. Try cutting out any snacking between meals, making sure your meals are nutritious and contain the foods necessary for satiety and won't upset your hormones.

Go for a 5 minute walk, whenever you do have the opportunity. I'm sure your daughters could stay with your dad for that long and you'd get some fresh air, exercise and me time.

Just think baby steps, because a journey of a thousand miles, begins with the first step :)

You really do have a lot on your shoulders Suze50 . But by coming on here today maybe you are ready to make just a few little changes.

I used to have painful knees and felt exercise was impossible, but a few minutes gentle walking really helped my head and strengthened my upper legs, which in turn eased the knee pain.

However the easier thing to tackle will be to make small changes to the way you eat , the content and the portion sizes. Can your teenage children join in on this , help plan some healthier menus and help with the cooking? Use the forum links from moreless and you'll see tips of how to get started on a healthier eating plan which can be adapted for the whole family, it is not like "going on a diet " . And there are lots of people on here to support you .... give it a try. 😊

You've taken the first step by coming on here so take it in small steps. Set yourself a small goal at first maybe cutting out snacks, using stairs rather than lift or escalator occasionally and build up gradually. Don't think of it as a diet and must exercise just managing thinks. And could you get someone to sit with dad occasionally do you can have a bit of me time and maybe pamper yourself and feel better about thinks. Wishing you luck

I've discovered a friend of a friend is a dementia nurse and I am going to meet her to talk about my dad so the fact I'm doing something is positive. I've been exercising my knees and they're not as painful. Today I'm going to start going out for a little walk..10-15 mins to start. Then my eating habits!!.. thank you for your positivity..thats my biggest hurdle I think

Thanks my knees bad at moment and waiting to see orthopaedic surgeon so downloaded the exercises too

Hi...it's always difficult to start a new exercise regime which will also involve a healthier diet.Think about the times where you can fit in an hour or 45mins at least 3 times a week when you can walk in your local park or go to your local leisure centre for a swim.once you start and stick to a routine it can be done.Dont be distracted you have to put yourself first regardless of your responsibilities...buy fruit and veg and reduce intake of sugar in the form of biscuits and snack..speak to your daughters about want you want to achieve so they can support you in the process..slowly does it..you'll do fine👍🏽

Hello and welcome to the forum. You have quite a lot going on. Two teenage children can be a handful, sometimes they are not as thoughtful as we would like. Changing your diet can help you feel better physically and mentally. Processed foods and large portions of carbohydrates will make you feel sluggish. Although they are quick and easy to prepare they are not doing you any favours. Include lots of vegetables and healthy fats to your diet and if possible go out for a walk during your lunch break, not every day initially maybe two to three times a week. A twenty minute walk will make a difference as to how you will feel. Don’t think of it as going on a diet but making changes for life.

Wow..i didnt expect such kind and thoughtful responses..we have had a power cut for 2 days so had not had opportunity to look at internet.. been a nightmare!..im going to take my time over weekend to read and follow all the links you have supplied and make a plan ..just reading your comments makes me realise I do feel out of control and that makes you feel you can't do anything.. but small steps at regaining control...i can do that...xx
