Same - google is easiest option. I spent an hour when i 1st started and wrote a list of calories in foods i used often - which made it easier to look up foods i used all the time :)

I use My Fitness Pal and think for me thats the best option

I can set up meals on it for things i eat regularly and if theres something i have not had before theres a bar ode scanner in the app so i can find it out easily

It also tots up the calories and shows me the macros etc plus ive synced it with my fitbit and it pulls theough the steps or exercise ive done and recalculates my calories - i love it ! ❤️ xx

Macros are macronutrients - they are fats carbs and proteins. So if you want to keep an eye on how much carbohydrates you eat (some follow a low carb high fat lifestyle) the app shows you the grams and percentages of all three

I bought a calorie counter book that I use all the time, I think sticking to one site or book is the only way for me otherwise you spend a lot of time comparing

You should be fine with that. You don't have to go into the detailed breakdown of foods if you don't want to. A wise person here said, "Eating should not require a post graduate degree". Just getting rid of the processed stuff and cooking with real ingredients will set you on the right path

I bought an indexed book with A-Z and as I'm going along I'm putting the calories in there so it's easy to find and specific to me and in the portion sizes I use. Good luck!

I'm another MyFitnessPal user. I'm quite tech savvy, but for those that aren't, I think as long as you spend a few days getting used to it, then you'll find it relatively easy to do the basics - macros are not something I bother with too much at the moment, although I keep an eye on it from time to time, as it interests me.

I like being able to put together my meals and then just add them in one click and the barcode scanner is very handy for new things, if you are using the mobile app on your phone. If it is the kind of thing you would use, you can also add recipes from the internet, so if you use things like the Hairy Dieters, you can add the recipe without much effort. It's definitely worth persevering with, as it's a real timesaver in the long term.

I have mine synched to my Fitbit too, so it automatically populates my exercise calories. I take the figure with a slight pinch of salt, as I am sure Fitbit overestimates, but it gives me a ball park figure. Interestingly, I find that my daily average roughly matches what the NHS BMI range is. I eat at the higher end, as I'm not in a rush to get to target.
